Bottle. Dark amber beer with a thin beige head. Rich malt/brown sugar aroma to go with some fruity/earthy hops. Flavor is rich caramelized malt and some light plum and spice flavors. There’s just enough hops to keep it interesting.. Dry finish, hides alcohol well.

Beautiful deep chestnut brew iwth a decent off white head. Nice complex malty aroma. The flavor was slightly bitter but fell far short of what the aroma had set things up for. Smooth, somewhat dry finish, but average overall.

Bottle 11/23/03 Pours a hazy redish brown with a modest creamy off-white head that settles slowly to a nice thin ring, lacing down the glass on each sip. Aroma is full and complex. Fruity, with apple, orange and vanilla and a little spice like cloves maybe. Stronger hops that the other BWs I’ve had. I can’t find those nice aroma notes any more here. Still though, malt and caramel. Some citrus rind. Strong and heavy. Very nice rich feel, almost syrupy. I'm a bit dissapointed after all the hype and the 4.2 rating. I’ll be sure to give it another chance.

Bottle: Poured a clear light brown with a small head and very little carbonation. Aroma is very sweet with a subtle touch of alcohol. Taste is bit too sweet (candi sugar-like?) for my liking; I would have preferred a more subtle sweetness (plums). Alcohol gives you a nice warm feeling at the end that I did enjoy very much. Great balance with above average body. Nice one from Victory.

Hazy red-mahogany color; small creamy head; it actually pours not as viscous and more carbonated than expected. There is a good malt aroma, a bit nutty, honey too. The body strength is limited by the carbonation and medium-high alcohol perception. Good malt and caramel flavor, sweet but not syrupy, with a strong final nutty bitterness. Good and balanced beer, but not extraordinary as I thought previously.

A clear red beer with a yellow or orange head. The aroma is sweet hoppy with notes of oranges and alcohol. The flavor is rather sweet with a lot of hops, oranges, and caramel. The hops burns your palate because it is extremely hoppy. A great beer for me - but only for hop lovers.

Bottled in November 2003. Poured copper-orange, with a thin ring of light tan carbonation. Citrusy, piney, sweet aroma. Flavor was very hoppy at first, with bitter pine notes fading into sweet, sugary malts reminiscent of light caramel and candied fruits. Reminiscent of Bells Batch 6000 without the same level of malt complexity, this beer's hoppiness suggests it should be cellared for a few months before trying again.

I sampled a one year old and just couldn't groove on it too much. I just love British Barley wine, but once again I find American BW too hoppy. The nose was beautiful I have to admit with peaches, raspberries and whiffs of chocolate. However, the body was not rounded at all and was a total hopfest while the malt only gave off cloying caramel attributes. Finishing nice and bitter. Not bad, but somewhat overrated in IMO.

Colour: deep red-brown; yellow-brownish head, thick, creamy, regular. Nose: intense aromas of fruit/gingercake, some exotic fruit as melon or papaya, also hints of port wine. Taste: hops first and after, but in between tantalising glimpses of frangipane or marzipan-covered fruitcake. Great balance (palate) as, being so hop bitter, it never really shows, unless by paying special attention to this. Mouthfeel: even cooled down, this beer is rich and feeding, with a marvellous warming alcohol-effect. Aftertaste: all the above fades out, ever so slowly, making one long for the next sip. This is truly a superb beer! Great in aromas as in balance, one wishes for a 750ml version - to end truly horizontal.
