Pours opaque black with a brown hue around the edges. The nose is quite faint with just a hint of honey and breakfast cereal. The taste is toffee to chocolate, with a malty background profile. The palate is medium bodied and textured with a nice elegant finish. Overall, I like this and am not sure why it gets rated not so generously.

Sep 2011: 500ml Brown bottle poured into two Alt glasses: this beer is really dark, dead dark in fact, a huge light brown head topped off a good looking beer. The aroma was of slightly smoked malts, coffee and dark chocolate also could be detected. The flavours in the mouth followed the smells almost to the letter, roasted and toasted malts giving off those lovely chocolate and coffee tastes, again with a hint of smokiness. Mouthfeel was a lot better than almost every other Schwarzbier I’ve had, being richer and thicker than the usual lager based brews normally found under this style. Wasn’t expecting such a good beer to be honest, glad I bought it. Easily the highest scoring beer of this style I’ve reviewed (this is the 12th).

Total Wine & More, Fairfax sixer ($8): Pours a dark color with a beige head. Aroma is cheap lager, a hint of roasted malts, and grain. Taste is pretty much the same. This is a little sweet. Not as chuggable as I would have liked. Pretty much, this is forgettable.

Bottle. Pours a very dark ruby with a small tan head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is raisin and sweet fruit malt. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet malt and metallic finish. A decent Schwarzbier from Krombacher.

Tap. Very dark reddish brown almost black colour. Heavy frothy beige head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, roasted. Taste medium sweet, light to medium bitter. Minor watery finish. Not bad, but rather uninteresting.

Had a bottle at lunch at Cookery in Dobbs Ferry. This didnt pair with the food I ordered at all but that s my fault for going for rate over appropriateness. Pours dark brown with thin head. Tastes ofntoasted malt, minerals, light cocoa, and wood. Kinda watery as well

Bottle (kindly delivered by Quack-Duck!): Deep, deep amber coloured, maybe a bit hazy, big tanned head that slowly collapses, light dryish caramelly nose, some fruits underneath; very light dry bitter flavour, very light bodied as well; thin fruity-ashy finish. A german beer, that is n o t available in Germany. Who knows why......

(bottle) Slightly unclear, dark brown colour with a tall and tanned foamy white head. Roasty malty and leafy aroma with notes of caramel, sweet milk and hints of berries, showing an early infection. Slightly bitter flavour, almost watery body and slightly roasted malty palate with caramel and slightly burnt notes; moderately carbonated mouthfeel; slim roast-malty finish with subtle berry-fruity notes.
