This Original Mild has been continuously brewed in Hertford by six generations of McMullens for over 185 years. A balanced mixture of pale, crystal and chocolate malts form the basis of this 3.7% amber cask ale, with one variety of Kentish hops - Whitbread Goldings - adding bitterness and light aroma.

Cask@Nags Head. Dark amber colour, mediumsized foamy beige head. Aroma is a bit caramel, hops and malts. Flavour is the same as the aroma in a really mild and wellbalanced way. Also has some slight roasted notes.

Cask-conditioned at the Nelson, Wheathampstead, Herts. Amber coloured with slight, off-white head. Aroma of muted malt. A bit watery with a fruity flavour and short finish. Ok.

Cask at The Nags Head (Covent Garden). Aroma is floral, with some malt. Dark golden amber color with significant white head. Starts floral, moves to light malt, finishes medium bitter. Something of a malt/hop balance in the finish. Distinctive.

Cask @ Coopers Arms, Hitchin. Amber color with a small head. The aroma is malty with some light hopping and fruit / hay. A round fruity flavour with a nice dry and bitter end.

Cask at The Farriers Arms St Albans 28 Sep 06. Dark golden coloured. A pretty white creamy head - lasting 4 minutes leaving rings in the glass. Fruity aroma. A rounded fruity flavour. A bit watery. Subtle bitter finish.

Half pint on handpulled cask at The Farriers Arms in St Albans. Amber coloured body with brilliant clarity and a small creamy head. Moderate malty aroma. Ripe fruit and hints of raisin in flavour. Dry and short bitter ending (28.09.2006).

Cask@The Nags Head, Covent Garden, London. Nutty brown, creamy steady off-white head. Mildly fruity and malty nose - not very strong. Watery mouthfeel. Light sweetish fruity (raisins) flavor. Simple session mild.

Cask at Spice of Life, Cambridge Circus. Chestnut colour with thin off white head. Not a huge amount of aroma. OK hop/malt mix in mouth. Finish is slightly dry. Average bitter

[Cask at GBBF 2004] A light brown beer with a fine head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel and straw, leading to a dry end.
