Wittekerke Wild combines the styles of Witbier and Sour Ale: in a new technique, the microflora of the oak foeders used for Petrus sour ales is harvested and then used in the first fermentation of Wittekerke Wit. The result is a unique balance of wit beer and sour styles. It pours a hazy straw color with a white head. Aromas of tart lemon and citrus with grainy malt, oak, and earth. Taste is similar – moderately tart with green apple, coriander, and some peppery yeast.

Draught @ Gollem Amstelstraat, Amsterdam. Pale yellow color, small white head. Smell and taste wheat, slightly malts, lightly ’wild’. Average body and carbonation. Meh.

Tap. Pours quite hazy pale golden, medium white head, creamy with nice lacing. Aroma is weird. Wheat, sour mash, oatmeal, urinal, bread. Flavor follows plus lime zest. Light sweet, light tart, medium funk. Light body. Weird. Not bad, but weird. Weird.

Sampled on draft at D’s this beer poured a murky yellow color with a medium sized foamy white head that left decent lacing. The aroma was chaky, sour, dusty and lemon. The flavor was tart, sour, tangy and chalky with lemon, vinegar, pepper, pineapple and grapefruit. Long finish. Medium body. Ok.

Can from Belmont Station. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is sour and a bit lemony. Med body or nearly. It’s sour, yeasty, but essentially really "bacterial". But very, very refreshing. Almost like unsugared lemonade. Tasty. Really good.

Pour is a cloudy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a nice wheat malt with some souring vinegar. Flavor is over all pretty watery to start but there is a nice palate cleansing that hits the tongue right after the swallow. Nothing exciting here, just a wit beer with some lactic acids added to it.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 5/4/2018. Pours very hazy pale yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of tart lemon, lime, green apple, pear, coriander, orange zest, pepper, hay, straw, oak, musty funk, wheat, cracker, light white vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, spices, oak, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of tart lemon, lime, green apple, pear, coriander, orange zest, pepper, hay, straw, oak, musty funk, wheat, cracker, light white vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate fruity/acidic tartness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, green apple, pear, coriander, orange zest, pepper, hay, straw, musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, spices, oak, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light increasing dryness from tart/spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately acidic/sticky, and creamy/grainy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is an excellent sour witbier style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, spices, oak, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink with the balanced acidity. A very enjoyable offering.
