The original session beer, Ordinary Bitters formed a cornerstone of English drinking culture. Perfectly balanced between malt sweetness and hop bitterness, our interpretation is brought up to date with the use of US Chinook hops. Delicate hop aromas of pine, spice and dark fruits are followed by a smooth, full bodied palate with notes of biscuit and caramel. Brewed with EKG and Chinook.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe (at 3.4%). Pours “bitter brown” with a medium sized foamy cream head and good lacing. There’s malts and caramel in the aroma, plus hints of fruit and nuts. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with a creamy texture and flavour of malts and marmalade with some spicy hints. After a while some traces of nuts come through leading to a slightly singer finish. This is decent – a simple beer done very well.

Tap at the Prague Beer Fest 2024. Full golden body, creamy ivory head. Grainy-malty and slightly herbal aroma. Subtle taste, pleasant earthy Maris Otter-style malty notes, bit grainy, with light citric hoppy touches to round it out. Can't score immensely high, but do I respect it a lot as a whole? I do!

31/1/2024. Cask at the 15th Colchester Winter Ale Festival. Pours very slightly hazy pale amber brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty, sweet, hoppy, stone fruit, bread. Quite sweet with light to moderate bitterness. Moderate body, oily watery, fizzy. Not a top 50 of its style for me.

On tap at BrewDog Paddington, pours a clear copper amber with a medium white head. Aroma brings out soft bready malt, almost no hops, and a hint of earthiness. Flavour is a little better, with soft bready malt, some crunchy bready crusts, and a hint of toasted nuts. Bready and creamy palate. Okay.

(Cask, gravity, at Pikkulintu Ruttopuisto, 20231019) The beer poured mahogany coloured and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, toffee, earth and berries. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were earth, malts, toffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A tasty malty brew with long lasting bitter finish.
