Postman's Knock is a beer offering an intelligent blend of complex ingredients, the rich brown beer with a smooth fine head has a very chocolately character. The combination of subtle flavour notes of vanilla, treacle and roast malt gives an initial rich sweetness leading to a velvety chocolate finish.

The beer is named in honour of Simon Evans (1895-1940), a novelist and short story writer, who settled in Cleobury Mortimer after World War One. He had been badly affected by poison gas in the war and, in order to improve his health, worked as a postman, walking up to 18 miles a day. Postman's Knock is based on the Champion Mild recipe and uses the finest malting barley, Maris Otter and Worcestershire Fuggles and Goldings hops.

Bottle Notes - Postman's Knock is a bottle conditioned beer which contains sediment, pour carefully and best stored upright at cellar temperature 10 - 12 degrees.

Auburn with a frothy, off-white head that fades. Aroma full of ashes with a bit of lingering smoke. Taste is charred bitter up front with both a hint of berries and caramel at the finish, with the former being fairly brief in duration, the latter lingering on the tongue, along with a mouthful of ashes. Medium-bodied, a bit thin but not watery, mostly mild carbonation. Ok. Lacks something in the likeability department.

Bottle online from The Hobsons Brewery. Pours a very dark chestnut brown colour with a thin fast dissipating beige head. Aromas of caramel, liquorice and dry dark fruits. Taste is caramel, chocolate, liquorice, burnt brown bread, dry dark fruits, a hint of nuts and roasted malts on the finish. Nice smooth mouthfeel but could do with more body. Low carbonation. Not bad but not great.

OK my first ever porter (why am I buying this in the summer, it sure looks like a winter drink?), anyway here goes…Bottle BBE in 13 months. Dark amber colour, light head that dissipates to leave slight lacing. Aroma of light roast, dark malts, earthy, a little sweetness. Low carbonation, medium body but a syrupy finish on the palate. Taste of roasted malts, chocolate, sweetness, quite a bitter finish. I started to drink the last quarter from the bottle and found only metallic notes so there is a lesson for me…porters are to be poured only. It’s not a bad beer I can appreciate the flavour notes, I don’t think this style is my thing but will try again at some point with a different brew.
