Single Barrel Amontillado Geuze

This Zenne y Frontera is a blend of two year-old lambic coming off one single Amontillado barrel (85% of the blend) and three different young lambics (15% of the blend), with the aim of creating an Oude Geuze with the refined aroma of Amontillado and sherry casks. This turned out to be a powerful “Sherry Armand & Gaston”. 100% 3 Fonteinen. Only 774 bottles produced (minus the ones we tasted ourselves).

This natural millésime beer is a blend of young traditional lambics that have aged on forty-year-and-older authentic Oloroso, Amontillado and/or Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Zenne y Frontera is the perfect symbiosis of a few stubborn characters, a lot of wild ideas, a vast palette of aromas and two beautiful regions!

One of a new series of Zenne y Frontera variants, a geuze blended with a lambic that spent time in a cask of Amontillado (Edgar Allan Poe's chilling short-story of the same name involuntarily springs to mind...). Off-white, mousy, dense, lacing and stable head on a deep orange-glowing 'old gold' coloured beer, hazy with a strong amount of fizz. Very idiosyncratic and expressive aroma of indeed clear dry sherry, fresh rosemary and even a vague whiff of basil, freshly cut shallot, bergamot tea, a whiff of moist tobacco, green tree leaves, sour grape, green apple, clove. Very crisply sour onset, lemony, green gooseberries and sour grapes, lively carbonated in a refreshing, refined, minerally way; vinous body, a bready core dried by lactic and lemony lambic sourness but also by vinous sherry effects, which become ever more apparent towards the finish, with these herbal and tobacco-like aspects coming to the foreground again; less nutty than expected, but this herbal, aromatic aspect clearly sets this version apart from the others. Ends with tannic woodiness, old lemon peel and hayish Brett notes playing with that specific, highly interesting and colourful sherry expression. Absolutely great - the two original batches of Zenne y Frontera spring to mind, and this one is at least on the same level of quality, creativity and distinction. I wonder how this one will evolve in coming years (and I do not mean the second hand market prices).

Fairly hazy golden with an off white head. Aroma of oxidized sherry, lighter than blends 92 and 94, oak, citrus, cellar funk and green apple. Flavour is light moderate sweet and moderate sour. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Pretty cloudy beige to slightly amber beer, small creamy dense off-white head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit dirty, funky, soapy, floral, bit of mildew. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: soft acidity, oxidized, lots of marzipan, nice stuff, lovely acidity, some fruit juice. Aftertaste: nice acidity, bit fruity, so much marzipan, bit oxidized, fruity, apricots, very nice stuff, really like it, except for the smell!
