But, it’s not all about the malt with Hook Island Red. Kilos of West Coast hops – Chinook, Columbus and Simcoe – add flavours of resinous pine with a hint of passionfruit.

33cl bottle. Bottled on 03 DEC 2013. Mahogany color, thick off-white head. Bready, nutty, dark fruity, musty hoppy aroma. Flavor has pine, red berries, hops and herbal notes. long bitter, biting finish. Like amber/red ales and this one is no exception. Nice body, high drinkability.

Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy amber body with a thick beige head. Lively carbonation. Great lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee and strawberry. Flavour of tart red apple, wood, bitter marmalade and maple syrup. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Nice fizz. Hoppy and heavy. Reminds me of BrewDog’s 5am Saint.

Almost clear dark amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth and slightly soft, mild minerally carbonation. Smooth creamy malt with a touch of dark toffee. Rich marmalade hops provide good balance, touch of pine too. Smooth soft finish. Bitter linger. Good show.

Dark amber, hazy, frothy bubbly off white head, some lacing
Aroma of caramel malts, resinous hop, pine, soft citrus
Taste of piney hops, caramel malts, citrus zest, sweet sugars, resinous hops
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, creamy quite rich texture, sweet caramel, lots of bitter zest hops tempered by the sweet malts. Finish as main flavour, a little dry, bitter tangy zest, hop resins
Overall - I liked this - heavy sweet and bitter at the same time, but probably a whole pint would be at bit much.
