Expecting a “Cascadian Dark Ale” here. I don’t think so baby. This without question is a stout and it is a damn hoppy one at that! Utilizing Pale Ale malt as the base along with a small portion of 140 °L Caramel Malt from Chile and English Roasted Barley and Dark Chocolate malt the resulting medium bodied beer is rich and complex with notes of dark roasted coffee and baker’s chocolate. We used Warrior hops for bittering to contribute a clean crisp bitterness and a blend of Galaxy and Cascade for a blast of fresh flowery hop aroma in the whirlpool. After fermentation we hit this brew with a fresh dose of Centennial and Galaxy dry hops to infuse this dark ale with fresh aromas of citrus zest and pine. In our series of stouts this one has the highest level of both hop bitterness and aroma. Hopefully you get a chance to try one on cask, it is magical! A 2012 World Beer Cup Gold medal winner.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and dark chocolate notes with light hoppy notes also noticeable. Taste is a mix of rich roasted malt notes with some black chocolate notes with hints of residual sugar notes and light dry hoppy notes. Body is full with oily texture and good carbonation. Enjoyable but I think it would benefits from a barrel-aged treatment.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. Pours a dark brown with medium beige head that lasts. The aroma is chocolate and roast. Slick mouth, similar flavors to nose, lingering bitterness, good.

This beer is a brownish-black color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually. Patchy lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty with malt and coffee notes plus some chocolate. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and hops. The finish is charred malt up front with a mild hoppy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottled @ The Hague Tasting, small sample. Notes are getting less and less. Bit fruity, malty. Ok stuff.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/12/2012. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big orange zest, lemon zest, pineapple, dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, light char, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice hoppy aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of orange zest, lemon zest, pineapple, dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, light char, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Slight pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus zest, pineapple, dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, light char, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and well balanced hop and roasted malt flavors; with nice robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice American stout style. All around good balance and robustness of hop and roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Thanks Adam. Enjoyed at 55F in a Cantillon Wine glass. No head even on a vigorous pour. Poured like BCBS, oily but yet only 7.5%! Nose is fruity like tangerines and raisins with some dark chocolate. Taste is nice. Drinks like a stout with the hoppiness of an IPA and the mouth feel of a porter. The texture of this at such a low ABV is just interesting. It’s a great beer and the galaxy hops are so easy to pick out and so delicious.
