Meantime Hospital Porter (called Naval College Old Porter in the US) is made in the same fashion. 24 months oak aging in used Bruichladdich Octomore barrels has lent a woody, intensely peaty smokiness to our ‘stock’ Porter, which we have blended with a younger beer. This latter adds vitality to the brew. Hospital Porter one beer that is best not over-chilled, and, like the original Porters, will mature with age.

Tap at Brasserie V. Amber-brown, deep. Thick steady beige head. Sweet chocolate oak aroma. Smooth, sweet body, lots of smooth oak tones. Rich caramel, some coffee/brown chocolate, sweet maple syrup, toffee. Mellow and doughy on the palate, but the big ABV catches up with you. Unique and well done, a very different creature than most Porters. Fruity amber malt and ale yeast undertones.

On tap at Bangers & Lace. Pours black with a yellowish brown head that dissipates to to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has notes of dark grains with a bit of roast and oak with a hint of backing peat. Flavor is creamy up front with roasted malts that are joined by a nice light peat note in the finish.

Keg dispense at the Old Brewery, Greenwich last Saturday.Had just half a pint as a full pint would cost £6.30 leaving this imbiber to comment: ’Fuck That!’. Black pour with a beige head. Smoky old nose, very roasty indeed. Chocolate, oak and coffee come through too. Smoke and chocolate dominate the flavour with light notes of coffee. A nice smoky-roast feel. Dry, roast laden finish. Not bad.

Small beige head. Opaque black body. Smoky roasty aroma with chocolatey notes. Dry-sweetish smoky charcoal roasty chocolate taste with mealy milky notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dry burnt chocolate and toffee aftertaste with lingering smoky charcoal notes. Very nice, and very similar to the Ola Dubh, but lacks the clarity and great bitter edge. (0.25l draft at the Old Brewery, Greenwich, London.)
