Cask at The Swan, Lancaster Gate. It pours deep ruby with a quickly dissipating off-white head. The nose is sticky stewed fruit, berry, faint jam and wood. The taste is berry, plum, lightly tart, jam, wood, leather and subtle astringency with a very dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Decent fruity ESB.

Cask at In de Wildeman. Dark amber colour, no head. Aroma of sweet malts, berries, light spices, a bit like Christmas cake. Flavour is quite sweet, light cloying, light spicy, berries, light bitter finish. Light bodied. Didn’t really like this.

Hand-pulled pint in the lovely ’Old Joint Stock’ Birmingham (West Midlands) on 5 Dec 2012. Looked great: those blackbeeries in the brew add colour as well as aroma and flavour. Good dark amber hue to the beer, off-white head that left some lacing. Nose and taste dominated by those aforementioned blackberries which give it a tart feel from start to finish (just like the bottled version). Really enjoyed it, but one was enough.

Cask at The Six Bells, Thame, Oxon, 16.12.10 Pours red amber with fast departing white head. Fruity with a berry tanginess, medium bitterness, quite robust for the strength. It’s been a long time since I’ve had this on handpump (Marsh Harrier, Cowley back in the late nineties probably) Likeable beer and served in very good nick. A6 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.6
