A timely re-rate after 13 years, I can taste the chocolate this time around in a sessionable enough texture for a stout. Its aroma has it too. Lacks depth but is orderable enough.

Cask at Southampton Arms. Dark brown, almost black colour with small golden head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, bit roast malt and tiny bit of milkiness. Taste is more creamy, lots of chocolate and roasted malt. More roasty than chocolate, Chocolate increases towards the end. Medium bodied and quite nice.

500ml bottle. Almost black pour with a small tan head dissipating somewhat. Aroma: roasted malts, ash, coffee, dark chocolate. Taste: dark chocolate, roasted malts, slightly ashy, coffee, quite a bitter stout though it gets less harsh as it warms up (served this way too cold). Medium body, soft carbonation, oily mouthfeel.

Bottle. Turner’s, Sheffield. Very dark brown. Film of tan head, that sticks admirably to the glass. Nose has high percentage cocoa chocolate. Some tangy vine fruit. A little ashy and earthy. Notes of liquorice and bonfire toffee. Taste is light, ashy dry. Light, burnt sugar sweetness. Minimal bitterness. Smooth and very easy drinking. Burnt, dry and bitter finish. Very decent.
