It's not too often the brewing process requires us to make beer in a mind over matter sort of way. Hot Rocks Lager presented us an opportunity to work with Tony Cornet of Bend Brewing Co. on a collaborative project. Working with our brewers to bring her recipe to fruition, she decided to "rock it" old school.
A robust, dark lager brewed with glowing-hot granite creating a “Super-Boil” that caramelizes the wort, resulting in giving Hot Rocks its caramel and toffee notes. Hot Rocks is one of Port Brewing’s early spring releases.

1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.5%. Very dark brown colour, big to moderate beige head. Moderate aroma of caramel and toasted brown bread, hints of dark dried fruits. Decent flavour, caramel and toasted brown bread again, a hint of fruit, moderate but sufficient hops in the finish. Well balanced and pleasant to drink.

Bottle at WBF-Raleigh on 04/24/2010. Slightly hazy dark copper body with a small frothy tan head. Sweet toasty and light molasses aroma. Toasty malt flavor with some light roast. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle at ChrisO "I’m Trying to see the Stool" pre GBBF2010 tasting. Hazy brown colour, thin beige head. Intereesting black lager. Bit of toast on the flavour. I liked it and would happily drink this again.

Draft sample at Bavarian Lodge. So I won’t lead up to rating #2000 with some lowbrau while everyone else is off at Great Taste. Instead I got to slip off the BG tonight. This is an interesting Steinbier. It smells unexpectedly smoky in the glass. A dark ring of foam over an opaque brown body. Taste shows a bit of fruit and sourness. Then the caramel malts appear. The description at the bar says chocolate, but what I pick up is Kona coffee. How nice to find this beer on an otherwise boring weekend.

Bottled@The Chriso rock the roof down pre-GBBF tasting. First beer after roof came down (I was into re-rating Allagash Curieux when the roof came down...). Amber colour, small slightly off-white head. Aroma is fruits, wood, some hops and mild notes of spices. Flavour is fruits, some herbs, mild earthyness as well as some slight saltwatery notes.

Bottle at Chris O’s ‘Raise the roof’ tasting. Muddy brown pour with a beige head. Very fruity aromas, blackberries and other forest fruits dominate. Fruit laden taste. Interesting.

Bottle at home from Kris Wines, London. A hazy dark brown pour. with a mid sized off white headthat decided to linger for a few pieces of lamb shaslik by the bbq......Aroma was sweet malts aplenty with brown sugar and a chunk of dark fruit lurking. First impressions of the flavour was sweetness up front with notes of chocolate, and more dark fruits. Caramelt malts spot on. All very drinkable for sure. Not my favourite style or beer out of this excellent stable, but worth investigation as this certainly doesn’t lack good qualities.

Hazy amber brown liquid with a nice head and moderate lacing. Very nice doughy malt in the aroma. Some citric/earthy/spicy notes from hops and yeast linger in the background. It’s a solid malty lager given character by lightly citric and floral hops and earthy yeast. Full and round. The feel holds up very well to the malt.

Ruby dark brown with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of malt and caramel with a touch of dried fruits. Sweet fruity and malty flavour with dark sugars. Slightly spicy finish.
