It's not too often the brewing process requires us to make beer in a mind over matter sort of way. Hot Rocks Lager presented us an opportunity to work with Tony Cornet of Bend Brewing Co. on a collaborative project. Working with our brewers to bring her recipe to fruition, she decided to "rock it" old school.
A robust, dark lager brewed with glowing-hot granite creating a “Super-Boil” that caramelizes the wort, resulting in giving Hot Rocks its caramel and toffee notes. Hot Rocks is one of Port Brewing’s early spring releases.

Sampled at the DC Local Gathering. Again, lost track of who brought this. Pours a murky, muddy brown with a thin, slightly off white head. Aroma is very pleasant, molasses, brown sugar, toasted malts. Flavor is sweet, more brown sugar, more molasses, more toasty malts with some light, milk chocolate. Soft, chalky finish. Very enjoyable. I think this was also sampled at the right time during the tasting as well.

DC Gathering, 22oz bottle courtesy of CaptainCougar. Deep brown color. Big, rich, roasty. Some sugary smokiness, maybe a touch of amber malt in there as well. Thick and sticky. Medium to full bodied. A quality beer all the way, full of flavor.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of bread, caramel, alcohol, bread, and malt, leading to a bitter finish.

22 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and golden deep amber/redish with a small off-white/tan head. Aroma is mild fruity hoppy. Fruity and roasted malt flavoured. Light caramelish and breadish. Smooth fruity and subdued bitter finish.

22oz bottle pours dark brown, off white head. aroma is malty with light hops. taste, roasted malts, choclate, grainy mouthfeel. Some light floral hops, caramel, med carbonation with a light bready palate. Smooth and easy to drink, keeps a nice caramel finish with some sweetness.

22 oz bomber courtesy of Sparky27. Pour is hazed (cloudy toward the bottom) ruby brown with a one inch light tan head. Falls with some lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, slight hazelnut and a nice roastiness. Also some grassy hops. Nice fresh nose. Taste is mildly caramel sweet nuttiness, followed closely by a clean roast taste and finishing with dry straw and grassy hops. Really nice transition and melding of flavors. Palate is thin to medium, though has a surprisingly full body. Actually makes this perfect for being very drinkable and full flavored. Dry, grassy finish - crisp and clean. Went really nicely with grilling / eating steaks. Thanks Eric, I know this wasn’t my first choice, but it probably should have been!

Bomber from Monument, in Concord, CA. Pours a really dark brown with a foamy beige head. Aroma is malty and hoppy. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is more roasted malt than anything else - heading towards a porter. Not getting a lot of bitter. But it’s not overly sweet. More sweet than bitter. Still, it drinks damn near like a porter, or more like a dunkel. Oops. Very tasty beer. We have sweet stouts, why not call this a Baltic Porter? Why not call me f****d up? A really good beer in any case. Port Brewing "rocks"!!!!

Courtesy of Gillard. Pours brown with copper edges and tiny tan head. The aroma is sweet, roasty, a tad nutty and sugary with some yeasty notes in the background. The taste is much the same with malt roastiness, a thin layer of caramel goodness and plain old sugar sweetness with a sense of malts tucked in the back. This brew seems to end with sweetness and a sense of lagery yeastiness.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a small, off-white head over a clear, dark brown body. Aroma is slightly sweet, malty and floral with light fruit (very weak aroma, hard to find descriptors). Taste is ashy, tobacco, grainy, and caramel. Light bubbles and a water like mouthfeel.

Draft. Brown beer with a cream colored head. Light chocolate and caramel aroma. Caramel flavor with some mineral notes. Medium-light bodied. Easy drinking. Caramel and mineral lingers. Very drinkable.
