There’s a spicy signature to this incredibly complex cockle-warming winter ale. The nose is reminiscent of raisins, dates and molasses while the palate is vinous with tannin-like notes of leather, vanilla, apricots and a hint of rustic Armagnac on the finish. An awesome after-dinner drop.

Bottle. Clear amber with a lovely white head. Aroma of malts, dried fruit, raisins, caramel and too much alcohol. Taste of malts, caramel, orange marmelade, toffee, dried fruits, candied sugar, herbs and spices. Rather strong herbal bitterness. Low to medium carbonation. Full-bodied mouthfeel but also too much alcoholic present. The ingredients for a nice strong ale are all there but the balance is missing. It’s a shame. We could have been so good together.

Shepherd Neame Christmas Ale, Flasche von BierPost.com. - Dunkles Kupferrot, blank. (17.3.2020.)

3/1/2020. 2004 Vintage. I retrieved this from my Dad's drinks cabinet after he passed away back in 2015, I guess he'd been given it as a present by someone Christmas 2004. It was the only beer he had in the cupboard! Decided to open it today and it's remarkably good for it's age (better than most fresh SN beers I've tried!). Poured clear dark amber with about a 1cm creamy off-white head forming which faded after a minute or two. Very nice aroma, sherry soaked raisins, brown sugar, toffee, bread, sweet malt, light fruity notes and a touch of vanilla. Medium plus sweetness, low bitterness. Medium body, slight sticky texture, soft to flat carbonation. Wasn't expecting this to be any good at all and given it's sentimental origin I kind of regretted opening it, but having done so I'm really pleased I enjoyed it and it's like I've shared a final last beer with my Dad.

0.5 l bottle from 'Trinkgut Knödgen', best before January 2020 (import label). Clear, deep reddish amber with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, gently fruity and a little herbal-grassy aroma of raisins, caramel, molasses and tea leaves. Gently sweet, malty, slightly bitter, moderately herbal-grassy and a bit fruity taste of caramel, molasses, tea leaves and some raisins, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly herbal and a bit grassy finish. Medium to full body, slightly creamy and gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Solid Winter Warmer with an industrial feel.

From the bottle. Amber with a frothy to creamy white head. Aroma is malty sweet with caramel. A hint metallic, no real spice. Taste is predominantly sweet with a very mild bitterness that plays out at the finish. A hint of clove lingers on the tongue afterwards. Medium body. Okay.
