Bomber. Batch 57. Pours a totally black hue with a large brown head. A rich nose of roast and fruity and pine hops. A rich fruity hop mix, bitter chocolates, roast, porter flavors, distinctly a BIPA, sweet pine, very balanced. I even get tobacco and more bitter fruit. Very well done. I slightly prefer Dubhe, but this is excellent.

Bomber courtesy of tkrjukoff. Pours black with a big frothy dark mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of thick lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is sweet, fruity and hoppy with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, tropical fruit hard candy, pine, resinous wood, peaches, papaya, star fruit, powdered sugar, salty liquorice, grapefruit juice and dark roast coffee. Taste is tiny sweet and very bitter with roasted malts, ammonium chloride, black pepper, wood, burnt cookies, caramel, oily pine, resin, unripe mango, star fruit, pumpernickel bread, very astringent black tea, grapefruit rinds, dried apricots and orange peal. Mouthfeel is oily bitter, heavy astringent and medium to full bodied. Finish is bitter with grapefruit rinds, roasted malts, ammonium chloride, burnt caramel, pine, wood, dark bread, dried apricots and star fruit. Way too bitter but otherwise nice...

Bottle on Amtrak Train 506 between Portland and Seattle (from Binny’s South Loop) 08/11/12. Batch # 010. Dark black with a big dirty tan head - this looks the bollocks! Nose is dark roast malt, light hops, chocolate, molasses, leather, wood, tobacco, touch of smoke. Taste follows, bitter chocolate, a little hops, some pine, a touch of soap. Full bodied with soft carbonation, smooth on the palate, dry bitter finish. Good stuff but this really came across as to me more of a stout than a Black IPA! I was picking up pine and hops and bitterness, but the stout elements maybe shaded it 55-45 for me !

Bottle at THE Sour and Saison Tasting, London. Many thanks to Ken for adding a bit of variety to the menu. Pours black-brown with a strong, beige foam head. Lots of roasted malts and burnt pine on the nose. Medium to big sweet flavor with strong pine, burnt brown sugars, wood, grapefruit and other fruit sugars. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Resinous finish, some anise and herbs, sturdy hop character, burnt grass, cocoa, earth, strong roast. Great balance, not abrasive or anything. Classic black IPA. Awesome.

THE Sour and Saison tasting. Another Rogue entry - tee hee! Very dark brown beer, big tan head. Smooth palate. Mild fine carbonation. Rich dark malt with a trace of roast. Nice hops - good and fresh and quite orange like. Pretty much does what it says on the tin and does it very well. Smooth, hoppy and very drinkable.

Bottle: Poured a deep pitch-black color ale with a large dirty brown color head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of a powerful hops punch with some citrus notes and some herbal hops notes which are offset by some dry roasted malt notes. Taste is a powerful mix between some huge dry roasted malt offset by citrus and grapefruit hosp notes with an herbal finish. Body is full with somewhat of a creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Well brewed with huge flavour and not necessarily something I would feel like drinking on a regular basis but glad I tasted it.

Bottle (batch 10) thanks to Ken. It pours opaque very dark brown, with a medium beige head. The nose is pine, roasted malt, charcoal, citrus peel, juicy fruit and chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, ash, charcoal, coffee grinds, bitter pine, some underlying spice, salted caramel and faint citrus peel, with a pleasantly bitter finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Flavoursome and very well balanced. Good stuff.

Batch #10. Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a very cool early fall night watching playoff hunt baseball. Appearance is a thick pitch black with a very rich tan head that laces to the glass. Aroma is a complex mixture of grassy hops, dark chocolate, nuts, lactose, rich coffee, but the hops really stand out moreso than any \"black IPA’s\" or hoppy imperial stouts I’ve had before. Taste is pretty phenomenal, it gives both punches that are found in a rich stout and a bitter hoppy IPA. The hops come out a bit more piney in the flavor and go down pretty bitter, with that rich chocolate/coffee flavor, I’m not sure of any other beer I’ve had that packs both sides of the punch equally hard. Great stuff, best brew I’ve had from this brewery hands down.
