From its forceful aroma of the fruity essences of pears, apples and grapes to a character hinting at anise, pepper, vanilla and fruits gilded in a powdered sugary glaze. Brewed only once a year on December 6, Helles is aged for a full ten months before bottling. It may be hard to imagine doing much better than this golden, robustly toothsome brew, with a few more years under its belt, it grows in complexity and nuance – proving that not only wine can age magnificently gracefully.

$5.60 bottle from Wine Warehouse. Pours gold with a dusting of a white head. Aroma is sweet malts, brown leaves, grass. Flavor is wickedly sweet malts, stone fruit, sweet tea, nuts, grain, grass, brown and green leaves. Perhaps too sweet for me.

Pours a very lovely, clear reddish-hued gold from a bottle, white head quickly dissipates to a small ring. Boozy vanilla caramel aroma and flavor. Good beer.

Lichtbruin bier zonder schuim. Smaak is warm, krachtig en zoet met iets van cognac, rozijnen en zoet fruit. Mist net iets te veel smaak nuances om echt een topper te zijn.

330ml bottle. Clear, amber colour with late awakening, small, frothy, fading, white head. Toffee malty aroma, hints of marzipan, dried fruit, raisin, maraschino cherry, Marsala, sherry. Taste is sweet, malty, fruity, sweet vinous, notes of Marsala, sherry, a touch of treacle; oily texture, minimally sticky palate. Intensely sweet but not cloying - could do well as desert wine substitute.

Monthly bottle share at Chez Sophie: 22nd May 2017. Four way split. Cheers Mat for the 75cl bottle from 2014. Sickly stuff really: wispy head on an amber body. Slick, syrupy and excedingly sweet throughout: even my sweet tooth winced half way through my quarter of the bottle. The alcohol level came through loud and clear too, could never drink a whole 75cl bottle on my own.

75cl bottle as ’Limited Edition 2014’ edition @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie. Pours a deep misty amber, thin ring head. Aroma is lightly dusty boozy rich barley wine caramel. Taste is exceedingly rich, boozy slick caramel, candied sweet fruits. Powerful stuff.

330. bottle - tasting glass @ Meug Afterwork 2017. Tried it next to the classic which was better than I remember it being, not too different from this one but the classic carried a bigger malt body & touch more complexity. Interestingly this beer is 100 % clear dark amber, head is almost instantly gone. Nose is this extremely sweet cloying touch medicinal syrup, herbal, alcoholic, weir alcoholic plastic pear syrup. Taste is extremely sweet & syrupy, lightly medicinal herbal plastic pear, candy with faint rubbing alcohol, boozy, lager yeast, very sweet. Body is all malt, fruit syrup, low medicinal. Potent, bit of a baffling beer with the low medicinal extremely potent sweetness, feels like it needs age & oxidation. It was interesting, intense but still a bit odd.
