5th October 2014
Hazy dark brown beer, decent pale tan head. Palate is light and semi dry with good fine minerally carbonation. Smooth malts, whisper of dry caramel. Light dry cream and traces of tangy fruits and marmite. Finishes dry. Inoffensive but I would expect a Dubbel to have a bit more punch than this.

33cl Bottle from Speciaalbierwinkel Bodegraven. Dark ruby-brown colour, creamy beige head. Aroma of burnt caramel, brown sugar, hint of metal, dark fruits, tiny hint of tartness, malts, cocoa. Flavour is medium-sweet, malty, burnt caramel, dry, cocoa/chocolate, bitter malty finish with some yeasty notes. Dry. Medium-bodied. Nice but fairly standard Abbey Dubbel.

0,33 l bottle bought directly at the brewery. Pours dark red brown in the glass, big tanned foamy head. Strong dark berries on the nose, mid toffee. Starts more like cold coffee, followed by a more fuity taste. Low sweetness, hints of marzipan. Later roasty and low bitterness. Easy to drink, not bad, but could have been more complex.

Bottled, BB 04-2015, large sample. Clear ruby color, medium brown head. Aroma of spicy yeast, caramel malt, hint of raisin, hint of roast. Smells very traditional dubbel, with a good balance between spiciness of the yeast and aromatic malts. Bit sweet in taste, quite dry, spicy again. Its actually too spicy for my personal liking, but it fits the style very good and the balance is great. Good beer.

Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a frothy tan head. The aroma is of roasted malts and liqourice. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with lots of liqourice, malt and a little yeast on the smooth dry and slightly peppery palate. I like my Dubbels and I liked this one a lot. One for a session for sure.

33cl bottle, bought at the brewery in October 2011 (bbe 09-2013). Dark brown color. Firm beige head, not too long-lasting. Aroma’s: caramel, roast, drop/licorice, a bit of smoke. Flavor is medium sweet, drop, a hint if smoke. Medium body. Finishes slightly smoky and medium bitter. The subtle smokiness make this an interesting interpretation of a dubbel.
