Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.
After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.
It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 02/16/2012. The beer is a clear amber color with a medium thin off-white head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit and mild earthy hop. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Strong grainy malt taste with lots of bitterness. Smells a little sweet at first but the taste is mostly bitter. Really like this one. Full bodied and the high alcohol makes for a long aftertaste.

(355mL bottle from the LCBO, consumed right after purchase). Served in a large wine glass at cellar temperature. Clear copper pour with very thin cream-coloured head that faded immediately. Rather pale for a barleywine. Initial aroma is strong citrusy hops with a bit of pine, then sweetness from the malt and some red fruit (cherry?), mild rasin and caramel aromas. Sweet initial flavours like candied cherry, caramel malt, citrus hops, some grains. Finish dries out a lot, bitter pine hops, bit of alcohol, some roasted notes. Mouthfeel is moderately sticky, soft carbonation is appreciated, not overly boozy. A nice American-style barleywine that has a lot of potential, but I think some age is needed to knit together the wide range of flavours which would boost the rating.

355ml at 10.3%. Pours a dark reddy orange with a small head. Aroma is rich dark fruits, some alcohol and spice. Taste is a little sweet to start with a hint of cherry. Some dark fruits and alcohol on the finish.

"Born in 2011" Nose of raisins and rich toffee. Classic flavors for the style. Alcohol is noticeable however, being a young bottle, not bad at all. Not a style I drink much of but... I did enjoy sipping this one. Worth a try. Makes me want to sample a few more of the style.

Pours a nice, clear copper color with little to no head. Flavor of licorice and malt, some sweet fruitiness. The alcohol is quite apparent in both the aroma and the flavor as well. An interesting beer--something to sip. Almost wish I had a cigar on hand, too.

Bottle looks really simple. Beer in the glass dark brown, small head. Starts strong, malty, quite roasty for a Barley Wine. Modest fruity like dried fruits. Finish well balanced, warming without being too alcoholic. Quite drinkable. Good!

Pours cloudy amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt,caramel and alcohol. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Okay brighter brown body with a modest yellow-beige head. The aroma is soft sour ale and a malt kicker with just a hint of alcohol. The flavour is heavy licorice and barley with a harsh adjunct and alcohol fuelled finish. It’s a huge blast of flavour that is not balanced well, but still drinkable.

Taste is quite sweet and fruity with notes of raisin and exotic fruits. Finish is smooth and soft. Alcohol warms nicely and is well hidden. Good and well balanced barley wine.
