Some outlaws of the American West ended up on the wrong side of the law purely by accident. Cherokee Bill was no such outlaw. Born mixed-blood, as Crawford Goldsby in Texas in 1876, Bill just seemed to not possess one single redeeming quality besides his unstoppable desire to murder, rob, and destroy everything he could get his hands on. In short, Cherokee Bill was one mean motherfucker. Historians don’t agree on this, but it is said that Bill made his first kill at the age of 12. Living with his older sister, the sister’s husband – and Bill’s brother-in-law – told him to go feed some hogs. Bill, not wanting to feed no hogs, then killed the dude for being such a demanding a..hole. However, being this young he couldn’t go to prison and getting away with murder seemed to give Cherokee Bill a sense of immortality. In 1894 he was a member of the notorious Cook Gang who for the next year or so would terrorize Oklahoma. Robbing banks, stagecoaches, and stores - seemingly willing to shoot anyone who got in their way in what was a regular a crime spree. But as so often happens, even Cherokee Bill’s luck ran out and he ended up in jail at Forth Smith, Arkansas. Now he wouldn’t have been Cherokee Bill, if he didn’t try at least one jail break, which of course he did, shooting several guards. But this time he didn’t manage to escape. On March 17th 1896 Cherokee Bill was taken to the gallows – just 20 years old.. Asked if he had anything to say, he replied, "I came here to die, not to make a speech."

Flaska från SB. Ljus, ganska klar bärnstensfärgad med smutsvit krona. Fruktig jästton, ljus fruktig maltighet, lite estrig, fat. Vissa oxidationstoner, märks att den legat på fat länge. Snyggt och gott.

Bottle, 0.75l. Aroma of bourbon, wood, vanilla and dried fruit. Pours cloudy bronze color with thick creamy tan-like head and nice lacing. Taste starts with sweet toasted malt and caramel, following is woody, leathery and dried fruity, mouthfeel is warm alcoholic, while finish is medium bitter. Full body, thick texture and average carbonation in palate. Double thrill with DoppelBill...

Doppelbock as interpreted by Danish trusted name Amager, aged on bourbon barrels; bomber shared with Steve - who, unlike me, bothered to read the entire back label story, needlessly elaborate as usual with this brewery. Egg-white, membrane-lacing, frothy, stable head on a lightly hazed, very deeply amber-coloured beer with cognac tinge, turning misty and deeper brownish with sediment. Aroma of almond, candied orange peel, sweet bourbon, hazelnut, minerals, caramel sauce, marzipan, clear vanilla-scenting oak wood, brandy, gari, mandarin, apple juice. Fruity onset in a well-contained way, ripe pear, candied apricot and yellow raisin, medium carbonation with a slight minerally effect, full and smooth body; hard-caramelly, even honeyish-sweet malt profile with a light-footed hazelnutty core and even a whiff of coconut, subtly dried by oaky tannins and warming, evidently very bourbon-like alcohol. Sweet (though nowhere cloying) marmalade, almond, vanilla and caramel effects, drenched in bittersweet bourbon, remain, along with a slightly meaty accent of 4-vinyl-guaiacol; hops remain hidden 'underground'. A very pleasant sipper, this one: perhaps a bit too 'American' and insufficiently 'German' to fully qualify as a Doppelbock, but a refined and highly enjoyable beer nonetheless, in fact one of the best Amagers I had to date (and I had a few, considering how long this brewery has been around).
