Clive Barker is, among many other talents, primarily an author, film director, and visual artist, born in Liverpool, England in 1952. He has become one of the most profound authors in 20th century horror fiction and fantastique (dark fantasy). His most notable work, “Hellbound Heart”, was adapted into one of the most acclaimed cult films within horror film history, “Hellraiser” (1987).

In 1990 Clive barker wrote and filmed his most ambitious theatrical project called “Nightbreed”, based on his 1988 novella “Cabal”. It is the first dark fantasy epic horror movie filmed starring the Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg, creator of the body horror genre, and the English actor Doug Bradley, best known for his role as the lead Cenobite ”Pinhead” in the Hellraiser film series. The American composer Danny Elfman wrote the score for the film.

The film presents a mostly inverted version of the classic monster movies within which the monsters are villains and the humans merely innocent victims. Here the tables are turned and the film’s monsters, The Nightbreed, are the innocents, and the humans the antagonists. The Nightbreed live in an underground sacred city beneath a cemetery called Midian, where they take refuge from the humans who seek to destroy them. The film’s two main adversaries, Dr. Decker, played by David Cronenberg, a sociopathic doctor and serial killer, and Police Captain Eigerman, played by Charles Haid, a violent macho police chief, are figures of authority and public trust. Both, however, abuse their power without consequences. In contrast, the Nightbreed, ruled by their god Baphomet, dogmatically follow a pacifistic philosophy towards the world above. The hero of the story is Boone, a resurrected dead man rejected by both the humans and the monsters, who refuses to be a follower of both worlds’ codes of law - a genuine rebel against the system but the saviour of the Nightbreed from mankind.

With ”Nightbreed”, Clive Barker wanted to highlight the part of us that envies the powers of the creatures from our darkest fantasies, such as immortality, changing shape at will, or flying. Barker commented that his intention for the film was to create a horror mythological film like no other, flipping all the, conventions of horror, where dead men can be heroes and monsters beautiful, where the only place of refuge is the most forbidden place on earth, Midian, the home of the Nightbreed.
