Beacon has a special place in our hearts as the first beer we ever brewed. We'll be honest in our experimental beginnings it was far from 'the best' at all. But three brews later we had perfected our gorgeous, light chestnut best bitter. We use traditional floor malted Maris Otter barley and personally choose a classic blend of English hop varieties to make what we call 'the best of the bests'.

10/11/2020. Bottle from Tebay Services. Pours clear pale amber with a small lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, slight butter, fruit and nutty biscuit. Moderate sweetness and medium bitterness. Moderate body, oily watery texture, a little too fizzy. Decent sessionable bitter, just would have preferred a bit less fizz.

Cask at the Wainwright, Keswick. Traditional session bitters are sadly conspicuous by their absence these days, so I always try to have them for their rarity value. This one's light amber with a white head. It tastes of toffee and twigs, with a mellow fruity background. It is in fact an archetypal session beer, and as such so much better for a mellow lunchtime drink or relaxing after work drink than all the bland gold's that dominate the market these days. In 2009 I would never have guessed that now, 10 years on, l would be saying I wish there were more session bitters around!

Handpull cask from the Eagle and Child, Staevely. Light brown, clear with a small foamy off-white head. Very little aroma: some grass, some white pepper. Sulphurous bittersweet taste with malt overtones. Sourish finish with a metallic aftertaste. Pretty terrible.
