For this variant we aged Bourbon County Stout in rye whiskey barrels, then added raspberry and blackberry juice and puree from Michigan and Washington. The process resulted in complex jammy fruit notes that are prominent but well integrated with the caramel and chocolate flavors of the beer and spicy rye character from the barrels.

Bottle. Color: Black, thin brown head. Aroma: Fruity raspberry, roasted malt in the background, some spicy rye. Taste: Mix of fruity and lightly tart raspberry, roasted malt, spicy rye and sweetish Bourbon. Boozy hints and hints of oak wood. Some bitterness at the finish. Over moderate sweet, light bitterness and tartness. Over medium body, below average carbonation. Pretty nice, although definitely not as nice as the original BCBS in my opinion.

Bottle from FW. Black with beige head. Loads of raspberries and blackberries upfront, some dark chocolate, a bit of coffee. A bit too tart and fruity.

Panda - huge thanks to Mr Tipple for this transatlantic Panda acquisition. Of all the beers on my radar over the last decade and a half, this has been the white whale, I have missed it more times than I can remember. It's been in reach again and again but slipped out of my grasp in a nightmarish manner. So finally, FINALLY, thanks to Mr Tipple .. it's an opaque dark brown beer with a tiny tan head. Smooth palate with a good fine carbonation developing. Smooth dark malts with a nice level of dark chocolate and a mild but pleasing coffee tone. The bourbon barrel shows, well bourbon and a little oak induced vanilla. The bramble fruits fit right in as I always thought they would, particularly the dominant blackberry, mild raspberry. Finishes smooth and semi dry with all those flavours coming together. Nice version. Finally!

EB. Not bad given how old it is by the combination of the dark beer, slightly acidic (and of course highly fruity) berries and Sherry-like oxidation doesn’t quite work for me.

Bottle, 500 ml courtesy of an shared with Pete. Black with beige head. Chocolate, cocoa and nice berries. Some bourbon. Smooth. sweetish with fruity tartness. Nice, but quite thin, lacking depth and complexity.
