For this variant we aged Bourbon County Stout in rye whiskey barrels, then added raspberry and blackberry juice and puree from Michigan and Washington. The process resulted in complex jammy fruit notes that are prominent but well integrated with the caramel and chocolate flavors of the beer and spicy rye character from the barrels.

Draught @ Beer Temple (2018 issue) Almost black color. Dense light brown head with some retention. Aroma's of red fruit, red and black berries, jam, marzipan, boozy, vanilla. Retronasal: berries, sourish fruit, boozy, bourbon, marzipan. Flavor above moderate sweet with berry-sourness. Fairly strong alcohol feel, but not overwhelming. Medium to full bodied. Finishes with some marzipan and a bit roasty.
Toch eigenlijk best erg lekker.

Perfumed berries, chocolate, vanilla, oak. Very well-balanced and with huge, but not overpowering, berry aroma. Great stuff! 4.3

Another fruited and rye barrel-aged variant of BCBS, vintage bottle at Bart’s Bourbon County tasting in Bruges. Forms no head whatsoever, just some minuscule beige-ish bubbles on the edge of the glass, quickly gone; black robe with bronze-brownish edges. Aroma of soy sauce, fish sauce even, salted tomatoes, bitter chocolate, wet wood, salmiak, dark ’forest fruit’ jam, stewed brambleberries, oaky vanilla somewhere, coffee grounds in the background, whisky, very old sherry. Soft but still vivid blackberry sourishness opens the palate alongside a ripe red berry sweetness and a more sedate dried fig sweetness, followed by a very thick and heavy, soy sauce-like umami flavor; soft carbonation (as expected) but still tangible on the surface of the tongue, thick and oily, fatty mouthfeel. Deeply structured caramelly and nutty malt body stretching over the entire mouth cavity, becoming deeply toasted bitterish in the end, bitter chocolatey too, matching well - as always with Bourbon County stouts - with a ’wet’, tannin-rich, vanilla-ish woodiness, spicy hops and heating, whisky-like alcohol managing to avoid wryness. The umami aspect has grown quite strong here - certainly in comparison with the Backyard Rye sample in the tasting glass next to it - but there is still a pleasant, crisp dark berry flavor in here, making it an interesting and very pleasant piece of art. I did, however, prefer the more lively crispness and somewhat more elegant profile of the Backyard Rye version.

Bottle, thanks to cocoapuph! Pours opaque black, fairly fizzy small tan head that dissipates fairly quickly with some residual lacing. Aroma is chocolate, blackberry, toffee, whiskey, vanilla. Flavor is quite sweet, strong berries, black berries in particular, lots of milk chocolate, rye whiskey. Fullish body, some creaminess. Nice beer, pretty sweet tho. Sorry I opened this alone...
