A beer which really needs no introduction. Arguably the most decorated beer in recent British brewing history. A rich, complex, dark ruby porter from an 1872 recipe. It has an old port nose, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours from four malts including finest Maris Otter and English hops. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

Pours a deep dark brown, almost black, colour with a small frothy beige head. The aroma is roasted malts, coffee grounds, liquorice and a little smoke. A roasted taste, dark malts, coffee grounds, treacle, bitter chocolate and light smoke flavours with a drying roasted bitter finish.

11/10/2020. Cask at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Havenstreet. Pours mahogany brown with a small frothy off-white to beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, bitter dark chocolate, coffee, toffee, ash. Moderate sweetness and medium roasted bitterness. Medium body, soft carbonation. Roasty finish with some banana developing. Beer of the festival for me.

Cask at Petersgate Tap, Stockport Have had this beer many a time before, but never got around to rating it. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a large cream head and good lacing. Nose is predominantly dark fruits with some roast malts. Mainly dark fruits again in the mouth, but liquorice, chocolate and toffee are there if you search for them. A dry malty finish to round things off. This is an excellent beer – dangerously drinkable for its strength !
