bottle, bought at Tucker’s Maltings in Newton Abbot. Blackcolour, lovelly aroma of coffee and chocolate. Full-bodied, lovelly flavours of chocolate, toffee, coffee, roasted malt. Wel-rounded by hops and a pleasant fruitiness.

Pours a dakr brown, nearly black colour with a very nice aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. Instant bitterness on the tounge is matched by a sweetness and a definite burnt flavour. Coffee beans stay on the palate for quite some time. Really good porter. Plus the Old Slug himself is surely the greatest beer character ever conceived!

Poured a opaque deep dark brown with a creamy, lacing slightly off white head. Smells of roasted malt, nuts, coffee but also a deceptive peat like hint of scotch. Flavor is heavy on the nuts and roasted malt, but a touch of those black currants they talk about, licorice and coffee. Light and creamy mouth feel, finish is lasting bitterness of light coffee. Heard this beer was a classic and I wasn’t disappointed. A porter-lover’s porter.

Cask conditioned at the Inn on the Green, Bristol. Near black with slight, tan head. Aroma was of bitter chocolate with a hint of roasted coffee. Flavours were of black fruit and more chocolate, with a decent bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

deep depp brown, with a bournvill dark chocolate pallate, gets better as you settle into it. again Cask, GBBF 07 ...Deep black ... light roast malts little coffee... thin roast malts some fruit soem coffee scored up 3.4 ->3.7 tk 3 3.7->3.6 dark brown... thin head ... nice sweet roast nose... big chocolate roast .... soft roast ... tasty 3.7

Bottled. A clear, dark brown beer with a nice beige head leaving lacings. Roasted aroma with some coffee and a vague hint of chocolate. Coffee, burnt malt and some chocolate-notes in the flavor. Too thin-bodied. Long, coffee-bitter finish with some fruityness. A bit one-dimentional, maybe some food or snack could to the trick? (070321)

Bottle from Utobeer. Bottleconditioned. Dark brown-tinged body under a thin brownish head. Roasted smell. Dark chocolate and mild coffee with a touch of cocoa flavour. Thin to medium palate (shared with Magne and CinnamonGirl, 03.02.2007).

Cask Black beer with some brownish edges under B.C."H.". Slightly hoppy nose, whith some dark malts, liquorice, and hints at moccha. Nice, grapey, definitely hoppy taste, with flavours as from grape juice without the excess sweetness and as if sweetened with Traubenzucker . Light but not watery, some grist-like slickness. Original porter - a flavour which I would not associate with the style. I would tend to call it a very good mild, in fact.

Bottle. Clear brown color, short brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, rye, coffee and some licorice, blackcurrant as well. Sweet and malty taste, slightly bitter, bready. Decent porter indeed.

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. bottle conditioned, ABV is 4.5%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Decent and lingering creamy tan head. The slug-like "trail" of the head down the side of the glass as you drink has allegedly given the beer its name - together with the fact that the brewers had to "fight" slugs coming into the brewery at the old premises. (As we know, slugs LOVE beer.) Pleasant aroma of prunes, mild coffee and chocolate. Roasty flavour, fairly dry, notes of coffee, dark bread and chocolate. Some fruity notes in the finish, "coffee" aftertaste. A decent porter with a moderate ABV.
