Session beer – not an ale but a lager in this case – that was apparently elected as the best of a series of four and released last September; hopped with Cascade, Citra, Columbus and Mosaic. Bottle at Afsnis in Ghent, three months old. Medium thick, snow white, stable and closed, creamy head over a near clear, vaguely ochre-ish tinged straw blonde beer, misty with sediment; lively sparkling throughout. Aroma of spoiling leek soup and withered kitchen herbs, rotting onion even, lemon candy, chalk, pumice, white bread pulp, soap, vague chicken broth somewhere. Clean, minerally onset, chalky notes under a slick, cereally, bit thin but not unpleasantly sweetish pale maltiness, a tad bready and ‘dusty’ thanks to the yeast suspension; mild citrusy and withered kitchen herb effects from the hops, softly bittering over a minerally, gypsum- and pumice-like end phase with that chicken broth effect (probably onsetting oxidation already) returning briefly retronasally. Probably already too old – this must have been a very delicate beer to drink fresh only. That said, it is an interesting idea, a “session IPL” as it were which I can imagine may please a larger crowd than just the beer geek. Interesting, but not in good shape anymore so my rating here would probably have been higher if I had tasted this in September instead of now…
