Bottle shared in London - care of Colin. Pours clear golden-brown with a steady, creamy khaki head. Citrus rind in the nose, moderate toasted bread, nips of roast. Light sweet flavour with some ashy roast, dry cocoa, scorched earth, orange rind. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Decent balance in the finish, with burnt toast, earth, dried citrus peel. Not bad overall.

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours dark brown with a small beige head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, cookie dough, toasty, wood, earthy, coffe grounds and leather. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, charred pine, wood, leather, peppery spice, resinous, coffee grounds and burnt toast with a dying finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Not bad.

On tap at Hashigo Zake. Aroma is a little buttery, but there’s plenty of charcoal and pine too. I’ll also forgive any problems in the aroma for a taste like this. Clean bitter pine up front, a little juicy peach in the middle and then a smooth dark chocolate finish. Bitter, refined and complex. This is everything a black IPA should be.
