THE FOURTH BEER IN OUR SANDY KERR SERIES CONTINUES WITH THE THEME OF BREWING REFRESHING SESSION IPAS THAT PUNCH WELL ABOVE THEIR WEIGHT.
It also forms the second of two beers brewed in distant collaboration with Burnt Mill, who last month brewed an IPA at their home in Suffolk. For the return we worked with the same hops and yeast, seeking some consistency across the brews whilst also showing the versatility of ingredients and how they present differently through varying alcohol contents and brewing methods. We selected US varieties Mosaic and Azacca, as well as Australian variety Enigma, for the two brews.
We led with Azacca in the whirlpool, where it contributed distinct pine notes and sweet pineapple. We also included it in the dry hop to a lesser extent, letting the other two varieties lead and bring overripe tropical fruit, bubblegum and watermelon to the fore, with a classic dank West Coast character riding underneath. The grist of both beers features malted and flaked oats prominently for the silky mouthfeel they provide, and we used chit malt and maltodextrin to further boost the body of this lower ABV version.

44cl can from Abeervinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours very pale, canary yellow, with fine white foam. Aroma is interesting tropical, herbal, hay, fruity. Body is average, with moderate carbonation. Taste is medium-high bitter. Final is fairly long and bitter.

440ml can. Hazy, yellow-ish, bright golden colour with average to huge, fluffy, slowly osteoporosing, minimally lacing, snow-white head. Citrusy and piney, hoppy aroma, notes of orange, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, some mandarine, a mango basic layer, some zesty aspects, sweet-ish, wheaty and oaty malty background. Taste initially sweet-ish, wheaty malty and tropical fruity, citrusy and slightly piney hoppy, mango basic layer, orange, grapefruit, lemon and some pineapple above; fading fruitiness, dry, mineral and chalky aspects find their way in and finally even dominate the finish. Watery-oily texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, fine and soft carbonation. Very nice Hazy Session IPA, sadly with the well-known SIPA abatement in the finish.

Can. An unclear golden beer with a lazing yellowish head. The aroma has notes of exotic fruits, hops, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of hops, spices, and exotic fruits, leading to a bitter finish.
