Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is roasted malt with bitter dark chocolate, a hint of dark fruits, and coal. Flavour is medium sweet with a pretty firm bitterness in the finish. Body is medium. Nice bittersweet Stout, enjoyable, but could have used an Imperial body.

16 November 2019. At 4de Gentse Bierquiz. Cheers to Anke & Pieter! Hazy black with a lasting, thin, frothy, tan head. Aroma of earth, toast, milk chocolate, raisin, fig, vanilla cream, black pepper. Taste is malty sweet chocolate, bread, dates, going over nuttiness, bitter toast & bittersweet mocha, sourish undercurrent, touch umami too. Dry, toasty finish, bit weirdly herbal with lingering coffee, cream & coffee liqueur alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Not the monster it would pretend to be, but a nicely balanced RIS anyway.

American style imperial stout by this Amsterdam craft brewing company, named after the giant prehistoric shark (so an animal that has actually existed in this world rather than a ‘monster’). Pale yellowish beige, creamy, mousy ‘ring’ for a head, on black beer with reddish-burgundy hue. Aroma of toasted hazelnuts, melting bitter chocolate, walnut liqueur, black coffee, liquorish note, vanilla beans, black peppercorns, pipe tobacco, beef stock cubes. Sweet onset, candied figs and dried banana with a subtle but structurally important, black olive-like umami accent; soft carb, full oily body. Deeply walnutty and toffeeish maltiness, thick with a lovely black-chocolatey quality developing a bit later on and evolving into a strong roasted chicory-like, mouth-filling bitterness accentuated by strong, warming, peppery, rum-like alcohol and a spicy, leafy hop bitter note, while softening vanilla, liquorish and cinnamon effects linger around retronasally. Bit old school, but I for one like heavy stouts that way and this is way better than many other Dutch attempts at the style I have seen passing by in all those years – including certain Amsterdam breweries. Surprisingly decent.

Bottle. Almost black. Malt, caramel, roast, chocolate and licorice in the aroma and flavor. Sweet, full bodied. Pleasant, fairly well balanced brew.
