A dark reddish brown ale with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with loads of dark fruits, molasses, plums, alcohol warmth, light. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with light peated notes, caramel, treacle, vanilla, alcohol warmth, very nice and smooth. On tap at L'autre oeil.

Bottle, at Nødingen. As God Jul 2017. An unclear dark reddish brown colored beer with a dense, finger-thick dark beige head. Licorice, burnt and roasted malts, and some dried fruits and a touch of alcohol. It's full-bodied and sturdy on the palate, nicely carbonated and quite soft, with a little alcohol warmth. Roasted malts, burnt notes, licorice, dried fruits and a touch of alcohol in the flavor, leading to a lasting malt-driven finish. Delicious indeed, even though it's quite fresh. 171103

Bottle. Can’t really see the reason for making a separate entry particularly for the 2017 edition as this brew has going through some miner adjustments every single year and some of the versions even had quite much more variation from the original batch than this one. The reason might be that the vintage is printed on the label this year? Anyway it’s still God Jul by no doubt. Dark brown/amber body, close to black with a fair, lasting and lacing beige head. Lovely aroma of mild roasted malt, dry fruit, some chocolate and slightly vinous alcohol with a touch of smoke. Flavor is solid sweet, smooth roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, toast, dry fruit, slightly spicy, balanced bitterness and a very faint hit of smoke – almost more like a feeling of smoke than really tasting it. Fine balanced body and long lasting, sweet, tasty aftertaste. God Jul has been released with more smoked malt flavor than this a couple of times previously, but I think this beer doesn't fit too strong smoke flavor. This version is has just the right level. By the years, God Jul has become the Perfect Christmas beer for me.

Bottle. Wine Rack, Sharrow, Sheffield. Missus used to get me the original God Jul, each Christmas, pre my time on RB, but it’s not been over here in a long while. Nice to see this, and three other iterations this year. Anyhow. Pours a deep, clear, cola colour. Thin and sticky, light brown head. Plenty leggy. Nose has woody malts. Some light, savoury smoke. Some bonfire toffee. Taste is smoky sweet. Light, ashy, woody, dry and bitter. Drinks easy at the ABV. Dry, vinous, light bitter finish.
