Recreated using a Californian yeast strain, pale ale malted barley, along with some Munich malt, Crystal malt and malted wheat. This will provide the biscuity backdrop to the big American hops. A blend of five American hops gives our beer a deep citrus bitterness with a fragrant citrus/floral aroma.

500ml bottle as M&S Southwold Summer IPA. Pours clear amber, short-lived white head. Aromas of limes, chalk, fresh orange, bubblegum. Taste is more citrus, with white sugar sweet notes rather than caramel. Develops into a lime marmalade kinda thing, with more hubba bubba. Bitter finish. Yeah, pretty good.

As Marks and Sparks Southwold Summer IPA. Clear amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is light and mildly crisp. Semi dry. Light malts carry a fair bit of caramel. Mild esters. Hops are a mildly bitter floralness. Smooth semi dry finish. Bitter linger. Too caramel dominated to be a decent IPA, more of a big ESB.

Hand-pulled pint in The Lord Nelson, an Adnams pub 100 yards from the brewery in Southwold. Poured an amber brown with a full head. Hoppy and bitter on a malty base. Mild citrus notes in both the aroma and taste but overall just an over hopped UK Bitter. OK, but I went back to Broadside after my pint of this: I prefer sweeter brews.

Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. An unclear amber beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of citrusy hops, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and citrusy hops, leading to a bitter finish.

The M&S version. Clear, copper colour. Bubbly, lasting, white head. I’m not having a good beer evening, this evening. Another big, fruity, buttery job. Chewy, toffee sweet palate. Bitter finish. Hoped for more from a 6.8% Adnams beer. Oh well...
