The arrival of hops to the brewing scene in England in the 1500’s led to a moral panic. Hops were condemned as a “wicked and pernicious weed”, one which would lead to the erosion of social and moral standards. Thank goodness they were right. Here’s hoping that our homage to the original pernicious weed continues this gradual decline. Organic Rakau and whole cone Nelson Sauvin go head to head in this strong, golden, hoppy brew. Bitter, yes. Intensely hoppy, absolutely. Too much, never.

Clear golden pour with a stable white head. Aromas are mango, citrus, pineapple, some passion fruit, lots of pine. Taste is malt, caramel, some of the fruits, some herbs for a decent bitter finish. Not overly boozy, despite the ABV

Not the freshest, but still quite tasty. Nice bitterness, with a bunch of dank grapefruit peel and some stone fruit. Resiny, but not too much. Not my favourite kind of IPA, but definitely very solid and enjoyable.

Half pint at the cafe, pours a clear burnt orange, ring of white head.  Nose is dank, armpit, grass, malt, onion, weed.  Flavor has malt as the backbone, but very very grassy, dank, scape, BO, catty.  Gotta have Amarillo in here.  Finishes medium bodied with less bitterness than I would have guessed.  8 3 8 3 14

Slightly hazy golden and orange coloured body with a light tan and slightly off-white head. Aroma of very pungent grass, flowers, resin and piney bitterness that shows a lot of alpha acids throughout with a kick of resin and some malty notes right behind. Medium-bodied; Super pungent hoppy biting flavour of resin and pine with a lot of grass and floral notes that shows a ton of resinous flavours, some good balance from the relatively supportive malt and ending with a big bite of resin and fruity notes. Aftertaste shows the hops of course with a lot of pervasive bitterness and some lingering sweetness and grain at the very end with some sweetness from the fruits as well. Overall, a nice and enjoyable IPA that hits the mark in terms of complexity, balance and especially the hop bite. Not really an 'Imperial' beer, but perhaps in terms of New Zealand and Australia, it gets close. I sampled this 33 cL can purchased from the Bottle Shop under a hotel in Manly, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 15-August-2019 for AU$8,00 sampled on the back end of the ferry back to Circular Quay on 15-August-2019.
