Straffe Hendrik Heritage is a special variety of the Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel, as it is a one year oak barrel aged beer. The beer is brewed in autumn and is only available in a limited edition.
The taste and fragrance of the beer are very complex and evolve through the years.
The tannin from the barrels blends exquisitely with the special malts in the beer.
The combination of the spiciness and bitterness of the quadrupel with the subtle taste of wine and wood from the barrels is inimitable. Licorice and dark fruits like raisins, prunes and figs can also be discovered.
With age the beer will develop a hint of porto as well.
EBC 100.

Bottle at Cotteridge Convention 2017. It pours hazy dark brown with a thick beige head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, candy, toffee, fudge, wood, candied fruits, caramelised sugars and wood. The taste is soft, sweet, sugary, tangy, heavy sweetness, jammy fruits, warming alcohol, liqueur-like, stewed pear and apple. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. A bit sweet and sticky for my liking. Okay in small doses..

Corked bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver; Armagnac version, vintage 2015
Dark color, compact creamy head. Aroma of wood, lightly vinous, a bit earthy, with light alcohol feeling. The mouthfeel is full and very smooth; moderately sweet, elegant, with enough malt depth, some roasted character in the final, a brandy hint.
Pricey, but very good.

The armagnac edition in this series, bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Opens with a loud bang - potential gusher. Thick, tightly lacing, yellowish pale beige, stable head, clear and translucent, deep burgundy colour with wine red hue, misty with sediment. Complex and attractive aroma of figs soaked in gin, ripe blue plums, ruby port, brandy, lots of vanilla-like oak, cloves, hazelnuts, stewed apples, overripe pear, caramel, leather, old wood, dried sage, melting brown sugar, banana. Sweet onset with hints of dried apricot, fig, banana and raisin, paired with a sourish redcurrant touch and not at all cloying, fizzy carbonation, full and supple, sufficiently thick body. Caramelly malt base with nutty edges, a tad toasty in the end with a very soft bitterness, phenolic spicy accents, lingering dried fruits flavours drenched in warming, brandy-like alcohol; drying vanilla-ish oak wood and a kind of ’clean earthiness’ from softly bittering hops add depth and structure to the finish. Deep, complex and layered quad, very nice like its predecessor, highly recommended.

750 ml. bottle shared with Kraddel. Bottle states just Armagnac but wowza this is vinous, maybe this one is Burgundy or some other red wine + Armagnac? Dark brown, head fizzes away. Nose is warming massive dark fruit, raisin, plum, the fruit is all vinous, oak, caramel, lvoely vinous with sweet & sour dark cherries. Lovely cacao upfront, warming vinous, massive cherry, has a perfect unintential wild vibe going on & carbonation is actually like that, body is bit thin but the fruit is amazing with low character, massive cherry, plum, massively vinous, oak. Really impressive. I scored the previous version 4.2 but I remember it being better than that, this one is amazing, so much better than I expect from these guys, one of the best new Belgian beers in a while. Classy stuff.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark clear brown with full head that settles quickly. Aromas of raisins, spice, toasted malts and Belgian yeast. Flavors of same, slightly sour (almost vinous) with definite wood and sharp boozy notes. Complex. Well done.
