Bitter-sweet Red Ale, A style that you don't see around too much these days, and what a shame it is! Hawkshead's bitter-sweet, malty red is just the ticket if you fancy something a little on different! Very much a traditional beer, there's plenty of earthy and grassy notes to be found intermingled with a strong maltiness and plenty of bitter rye licks.

(Bottle) Brownish red colour with brief, tan head. Malty nose with notes of bread, caramel, dried fruit, nuts, orange peel and spices. Malty taste with caramel, bread, dried fruit, nuts, orange peel and a balanced spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a slight sweetness. Smooth and well balanced. Quite nice.

Cask @ Moon and Starfish, Clacton-on-Sea. Clear dark red with a small white head. Aroma of malts, marzipan and toffee. Taste of caramel, cherries, toffee, red berries, malts, cake and a hint of lemons. Low bitterness. Low carbonation. Ok.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours a deep ruby with minimal cream head and good lacing. There’s malts and dark fruits in the aroma plus some hoppy hints. In the mouth it is definitely bitter but with a little underlying sharpness. Flavour has traditional hops, malts and ginger with traces of berry fruits and cake coming through later. Finish is quite dry and slightly sweet. This is decent.

Cask at the Dog & Gun, Keswick. Chestnut-red with an off-white head. Burnt caramel with cherries and a touch of Christmas cake. Decent body, sweetish. Enjoyed this; it's my sort of bitter.
