Greenmantle is the ale with which Broughton Brewery was founded in 1979. Taking it’s name from the eponymous John Buchan novel. Greenmantle hero Sandy Arbuthnot, a latter day James Bond is sent to Istanbul where he becomes a legend. He is described in the final words of the novel as “one who rode like one possessed.” John Buchan spent a great deal of his childhood in the village of Broughton. We brewed this beer in honour of Mr. Buchan and crafted the Greenmantle to mimic the character of Sandy Arbuthnot.

Greenmantle is a brown bittersweet ale, with excellent licorice aromas and a smooth light hop aftertaste. Enjoy this delicious iconic pint.

Bottled@Poirotti’s Skotoberfest 2007. Nutbrown colour with mediumsized white bubbly head which vanishes quite quickly. ’Sweet malts along with some fruity hoppy notes. Flavour is sweet malts along with some grassy bitter hops. Also some slight sour wooden notes in it. A bit watery.

Cask at Halfway House, Edinburgh. Deep golden. Grassy hops shine up a body consisting of buttery malt. Sweetish and fruity with medium body. Salty bitter finish. Fairly hoppy for a Broughton and with a fresh feel to it.

Cask handpull at Halfway House, Edinburgh. Gold, lasting beige head. It’s fine. Citrusy bitter with some tangerine. Good condition, decent hop on end and nice citrus flavours overall. Considering I had a whopping hangover, this was perfectly acceptable.

500ml bottle from Booth’s, Knutsford. I haven’t had this since being on a train between Edinburgh and Falkirk 6 years ago. Beautiful clear chestnut colour with thick beige head. Slightly malty, mineral flavour. Decent session hop on finish. It’s a decent session bitter enough rounded dryish malt and good hop that balances out the hop. Fine. Some candy sugar too.

Amber color with brownish hue. Simple malty aroma. Dry and weak taste, some dry caramel. Too poor!

(Bottle 50 cl) I’ve had light lagers before with a lot of flavour. Well, this is the exception from that rule. Beautiful, deep bronze in colour, nice head. Weak notes of malt and some fruit and then...nothing. Absolutely nothing. Just water, and a whole half litre of it. 100105

An amber beer witha fine but collapsing beige head. The aroma is light, but with notes of caramel. The flavor is slightly burnt with notes of caramel and the body is thin. I was disappointed in this one.
