In the past, due to lack of hygiene, drinking water was usually polluted with illness-causing bacterias. Beer did not contain such pathogens, as it was boiled and hopped. Therefore, until the end of the 19th century, beer was the preferred daily beverage. To keep a clear head, Bamberg's brewers had a special brewing technique to make low-alcohol beer. Hoppy, mildly smoky and with less than 1,2% alcohol the unfiltered Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Hansla brings back this old Bamberg brewing tradition.

Data:
Original gravity: 3,4%

Gedronken met graaltapje

Bruinoranje, semitransparent, basic schuim.
Bacon! Mout, muf
Mout, muf, bacon, meh

Hoewel ik zeker slechtere lage ABV bieren opheb, moet deze brouwerij zich hier gewoon niet toe verlagen. Een matig NA biertje met baconsmaak.

Bottle at home. Pours deep, copperish golden with a long lasting, frothy white head. Nose is that classic smoky Schlenkerla character with bready malts and dried fruits, a bit moderate but it was expected obviously. Taste is smoky bready malts, hay and dried fruits but it also has that classic low/non ABV emptiness in the finish. Finishes dry and somewhat bitter, has a light, borderline empty body and lively, prickly carbonation. Although it has its flaws they were expected at this ABV, and ultimately it’s good for what it is.

Review based on the BJCP2021 guidelines (style 6B, adapated: low alcohol). Bottle 50 cl - Batch LUR (BB: 05/2024). AROMA: medium-high smoky aroma with a faint worty-like background. APPEARANCE: light amber color and cristal clear. medium-low ivory head with good retention for style. TASTE: initial low worty-like flavor, followed by medium to medium-high smoky notes. low herbaceous hop notes. medium-high bitterness with an almost dry and somewhat bitter finish. MOUTHFEEL: low body with medium-high carbonation. OVERALL: although it lacks the malt character of the normal version, this LA version is a good effort overall.

500ml Bottle - Amber in colour. Smoky aroma with notes notes of ham and ash dominating. The taste is very smoky but rather thin (unsurprisingly) and features notes of ham, ash and caramel.

Bottle drunk with stir fry at home. Reddish amber, moderate head, lightly smoky flavor with some grain notes. Thin body but moderate flavor, great for a low alc entry! Nice smokiness rounds it out.

Klar kupferfarben mit weißer Schaumkrone. Malziger, rauchiger Geruch. Geschmacklich malzig, leicht getreidig, erstaunlich präsente rauchige Noten mit Schinken und Speck. Hohe Süße mit leichter Bitterkeit, leichter Körper mit spürbarer Kohlensäure.
