Clear, red beer with with an off-white bubbly head. Aroma is malty and fruity. The flavour has the same fruit and malt elements as the smell, with a touch of caramel but I was also getting a very slight zesty, orange hint in the flavour and especially in the backtaste, which gives it a more refreshing edge. Quite pleasant.

Cask at The Guildford. Pours clear golden brown, bubbly off-white head. Aromas are toffee and red fruit. Taste is light sweet, but also a bit musty. Medium body, creamy texture. Much better than the bottled version.

Bottle, over-priced, from a gift-shop in Aviemore. Pours clear brown, no head. Aromas are sweet toffee, light herbs. Taste is sweet too. Not a fan.

I actually saw one of these wild Highland cats in a field not far from Wick. Pretty cool - bigger than the average housecat. Light brown. Warm nutty nose. Quite nutty, sweet caramel finish.

On cask @ the Royal Dunkeld Hotel. Pours a dark amber into chestnut colour. The nose has toffee and malt mostly - maybe a hint of apple. The taste is more toffee malt and quite caramel on the end. The palate is medium bodied and textured and well balanced. Overall, a good ale.

At home: 500ml bottle, best before 28 Aug 2013, poured into a UK pint sleeve on 26 sep 2012. Lovely amber coloured body with a full, deep foam head, like an off-white snow blanket. The nose is all about roasted and toasted malts: they indicate a rich, strong malty brew is below and they are not far wrong. The taste as the aroma suggests is malty molasses with some butterscotch and caramel added into the mix: this isn’t overly sweet though, so some hops must help to give it a balance and slight bitter finish. The body feel isn’t as rich or creamy as the nose would have you believe: this is robust brew more than a smooth one. A Winter Warmer sort of beer without the Smoking Jacket.

I really wasn’t keen on this one. A nice-looking pint with a decent head, but I found the first taste too sickly-sweet and then it’s an almost burnt aftertaste which was far too bitter. Rather than offering balance it just meant there were two flavours I wasn’t very keen on.
