Beer in Scotland was traditionally categorised in shillings, according to the amount of tax charged per hogshead – a giant barrel of which contained 42 pints. 40/- ale was a very light beer often supplied to farmhands. 50/- and 60/- beers were also reasonably light and mild. 70/-, 80/- and 90/- were progressively stronger, export-quality beers. The shilling system continued to be used to indicate the beers’ quality and was legally recognised in 1914.
Brewed with three different varieties of hop and a multitude of malts, Caledonian 80/- has hidden depths. Satisfying and timeless, this beer is the essence of Scotland in a glass.
The definitive classic 80/- ale: full-bodied, complex malt and hop flavours, dry but spicy. Characterised by a superb creamy head and hoppy finish

(bottle) Clear, chestnut-brown colour with a mid-sized tanned foamy head. Mildly toasty malty aroma with caramel, nutty notes, accompanied by slightly fruity and woody hops. Slightly sweet and bitter flavour, light bodied with a modest carbonation. Delicately nutty toast-malty aroma with notes of caramel and a tinge of fruity hops; slim and mildly toasty and fruity finish with notes of caramel and berries in the aftertaste. Slim but likeable Bitter. 11.II.13

Canette 500ml.

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown amber colour, foamy off-white head that diminshes and a roast malt aroma. A rich burnt roast malt taste balanced with hints of fruit and a dry hop bitter finish. Smooth mouth feel. Quite OK.

Cask in a few different places over the years. Sweet nose, bittersweet taste, although no real flavours to speak of.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 30.04.2012
Aroma is sweet and somewhat stale with toffee, goldings hops and nuts. Flavour is sweet with toffee, nuts, and caramel. Palate is rather rich for a 4,1% ABV beer. A bitter with scotch ale feeling.

Has a soft malt & plant aroma. Body is copper-gold with an okay head. Flavour is coffee and nuts, with heavy barley notes. Mouthfeel is weak however. It could be great if the palate was stronger, but instead it’s just good.

Bottle from Tesco.
Light brown, medium frothy white head which dissipates to a thin layer, reasonable lacing.
The nose is dark caramel malt, hint of spicy hops, yeast, that Caley popcorny malt, sweet, hint of toffee, easy drinking.
Palate - soft carb, quite sweet, dull finish same as main flavour, smooth.
OK Scottish ale...easy drinking.
