Can. A- Smoked ham, char. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Bitter, char, cocoa, roasty, umami. P- Full body, slightly creamy texture, average carbonation, slightly bitter finish. O- Surprised it's listed as a foreign stout and not a rauchbier. This is all about the smoke. The finish is a charred bitterness. Really tasty and perhaps one of the tastiest brews in all of Ireland, but the lingering bitterness is just a bit more than I prefer.

Draught Very good russet-cream head over jet-black beer. Smoke, ashes and lots of roast. Sweet and smell of hot, rusting metal, metalslug. Sweet-roast, with hardly any bitterness until the very finish. The smoke needs a bit of time to arrive in the flavour, without taking anything away from the rather remarkable, if non-cloying sweetness. Bit nutty, roasted hazelnuts and a certain oily flavour. Violette de Liège. There is no more than a hint at stout acidity. Well bodied, alcoholwarmth. Soft carbonation. Quite good strong stout, but I'm sure that if the Rauchmalz would have been stronger featured, it would have seriously bettered this beer.

440ml can as part of a delivery from House of Trembling Madness, York. At 11%. Dark brown, opaque with a small ring of beige head. Smoky molasses, heavy black bread, salted plum. And it’s not the ode to sweetness I was expecting in the taste: it’s nicely balanced, with the bitterness edging it in the finish. Bitter herbs and liquorice join the smoky aftertaste. Superb!!

Black with creamy head. Aroma has toasted grains and a leathery smokiness. Silky texture, very slick. Light smokiness is complemented by the burnt malts.

440ml can from Premier Hop, Pudsey, W.Yorkshire. A black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Roasty, malty, smokey, treacle, some dark chocolate aroma/taste. Really good slightly sweet tasting stout from Whiplash, probably the best Irish beer that I've consumed to date.

Panda 🐼 at home thanks to Colin. A dark mahogany brown coloured pour with a whispy dark tan head. Aroma is nice rich dark roast, smoky peat notes, thatched cottage, dried fruit cake. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, rich smooth earthy roast, mellow smoke, brandy snap sugars, spicy fruit cake. Palate is semi sweet, full bodied, rounded, fine carbonation. Lovely and rich.
