Available in cask, bottles and cans, Courage Directors was originally brewed exclusively for the directors of the Alton brewery, but following demand, the beer was made available to the public. Full bodied with a clean, bitter taste, balanced with a sweet burnt, malty and fruity notes with a distinctive dry-hop aroma and flavour. Brewed with English Target hops, burnt Pale and Crystal malts.

500ml can. Pours a clear copper amber colour, bubbly tan head that diminishes and aroma is caramel with slight floral hop. Taste is malt, toffee and caramel. Gasey, with earthy bitterness and some residual sweetness.

500ml bottle from Sourced Market St Pancras. Clear brown coloured body. Diminishing fawn-coloured head. Caramel malty nose. Fruit caramel taste, lightly spiced. Resin-like bitterness to the ending. Crisp and soft in the mouth. Nice (shared with friends, hotel room, London 24.11.2012).

50cl bottle from ABCBeers,the Hague. Thick white head. Clear amber pour. Nice enough brew but it doesn’t stand out from the crowd.

Hand pulled pint in my nearest pub (Park Inn, Wellington, Shropshire) on 11th May 2012. Amber body, clear and handsome looking: off-white head of foam sat on top. When ever I’ve had this beer (many times over the years) it has never had a great aroma: no matter who was brewing it at the time. Malts foremost with hints of fruity hops is what I got this time, which is more or less what I remember from other tastings. Malts lead the way in the taste too: with the hops and yeast coming along nicely in the background. Fruity biscuits; lightly baked with a finish of mildly bittering hops. Easy to drink and a standard ‘Best Bitter’; never been a favourite but nothing wrong with it.

23/06 A 0.5 l bottle courtesy of Marko, thanks for sharing! It poured clear amber body with small head. Caramel and nuts aroma. Sweetish flavor, caramel and fruity malty, herbal hoppy and somewhat grainy, but still smooth. Medium bodied with long, again caramel and herbal finish. A decent bitter.
