Cask on the Sheffield, on RateBeer Valley of Beer Crawl โ08...black,smooth roast malts,little sweet little chocolate,decent roast cask at standing order ... red brown ... thin off white head ... sweet roast puff candi nose ... light creamy toffe chocolate malts ... again puff candi hints 3.8 indeed

(Cask at White Horse, Parsonโs Green, London, 25 April 2008) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of liquorice and freshly ground, heavily roasted coffee. Malty, roasted taste with fresh coffee, dark fruit, ashes, prunes, liquorice and a hint of smoke. Nice coffee bitterness in the finish. Rather dry for a porter. Medium body. This really is an excellent porter! More of this please.

Cask (gravity) @ The National Winter Ales Festival 2008, Manchester, UK. Clear medium red brown color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate, coffee, notes of licorice. Flavor is moderate sweet, light acidic, and moderate bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium to light, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is flat. (180108)

Cask at Merton Summer Beer Festival 07-07-07. Poured black with very little head. This for me was the only beer that managed to challenge the Grand Union Simcoe and Bowman Quiver over the weekend and it did so very well sitting between the two in my ratings. A very convincing porter with great liquorice throughout, a touch of sourness maybe and some nice dried dark fruits thrown in for good measure. A lovely beer that tasted corking and I for one wasnโt upset at all that we were unable to get the Gorlokova from the same brewery as this was an excellent replacement.

Cask@The Criterion, Leicester. Reddish black beer with a lightly roasted aroma and a roasted, mildly coffee and spiced flavour. Overall a nice smokey/roasted beer.

Half on gravity at the Ipswich Beer Festival. Very dark, almost black in colour. Small layer of foam. Coffee aroma. Well rounded roasted taste of dark chocolate, blend of coffee and malty sweetness (21.09.2006).

Cask handpull at Market Porter, Borough. Black with ruby edges, bubbly beige head. Chocolatey porter, choc malt aroma, nice velvery choc in mouth, bit of sourness, nice. Lovely aroma. Good porter.

Cask @ Volunteer Arms, GBBF 2006. Black colour with a longlasting tan head. Roasted malty aroma. Roasted malty slightly sweet flavor with some hints of coffee. Sweet roasted finish.

Cask half-pint at NERAX on 5/4/06. Deep black, stained-oak brown color shows medium-high clarity, upon settling. Creamy off-white/ivory colored head is well retained, leaving light lacing as well. Aroma is tight and poignant, yet soft and rich, though that dosent make sense. Mellow (soft) roast and light coffee drive deeply in to the senses (poignant) and recede, leaving light vanilla and chocolate/prune notes in its wake. VERY high aroma strength, but yet so balanced and not allowing any one note to dominate. The more I sniff, the more complex it becomes, with coffee providing light zestiness on the edges, while lightly succulent chocolate liqueur notes add most of the substance, and dusty, but lightly bitter hops enliven things further. The flavor is, not surprisingly, complex, rich, succulent, but yet not overdone (is there such thing as an overdone british cask ale??). Chocolate and husky brown malts balance things initially, with just a trickel of vanilla-flavored coffee on the edges. A graceful hint of anise/licorice gives it more vigor on the finish and crunchy, earthy dark malts linger on providing depth and intrigue. Nearly creamy texture, very smooth, with no touch of wateriness and a tingle from the carbonation. No alcohol anywhere. Looking at others ratings, I guess this isnโt very true-porter-like, but Iโm not rating it to-style.

Cask@Birimingham Beer Festival. Black beer with a light head. The aroma is chocolatey and malty, and the flavour is dry, and slightly roasted with hints of chocolate. Overall a nice plain sweetish porter.
