Cains FA is no small beer: despite its deceptively pale golden colour, it boasts a big, smooth flavour and strong punch. Brewed with the finest English malts, and conditioned in cask with dry hops to produce fresh hop aromas and a fuller flavour, delighting the mouth and stimulating the tongue.

500ml pasteurised and filtered bottle bought at Cains Brewery Tap in Liverpool and shared with CinnamonGirl and Magne on the train to London. Clear, copper body colour under a soapy, white tophead. Aroma of noble hops. Citrus fruits in flavour mixed with sweet, dried fruits and notes of caramel malts. Modest bitter endnotes. Little more than a standard ESB (05.05.2009).

Bottle, Legendary Lancs Heroes, Crosby. Just saw on the local news that the Cains brewery is under threat of closure due to an unpaid bill of some sort. That would be very sad indeed if it actually goes down. The brewey tour there is well worth a look as is the brewery tap. Regarding the FA, it poured a dark golden colour with a foamy white head. Aroma had a healthy dose of citrus fruit, hop and caramel with the flavour having a similar essence. Thought I noticed the slightest metallic tang, but couldn’t be entirely sure. Regardless, this was quite enjoyable and above average.
