Bottle from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Lovely robust Doppelbock with sturdy sweet brown malts, caramel, dark bread. Hint of roast. Mild to medium sweet with a light bitterness. Above medium body. Great.

Bottle. Man this is a great beer. Taste is like a nutty, malt treat with slight hop undertones. Color is a beautiful amber like the soon at the end of a hot, humid day. Aroma, malty with a great balance. Just good stuff.

Dark hazy brown pour, with a medium beige head. Thick, sticky bready malts. Lots of cereals, sweet plums, and apples. Some minerals, and a tad metallic. Soft mouth feel, soft carb. Very bready, grainy finish, with next to no bitterness and quite a bit of sweetness.

Classically shaped Doppelbock (even with the -ator suffix) by a family-owned brewery housed in what was once, a couple of centuries ago, an actual monastery - this is as classic as it gets for this genre of nutritious, prestigious German Lager style. Dense and frothy, beige-tinged off-white, fluffy, moussey, lacing head on a clear, deep copper-glowing mahogany brown robe with disparate, minute bubbles - a joy to the eye for sure. Alluring aroma of brown bread crust, pecan pie, ground hazelnuts, tea, wet bluestone, dried figs, dry caramel, hints of toast, prunes, sweetclover, Schnapps and clove, even something a bit woody. Malt-fruity onset, rounded and sharply edged, with impressions of dried lingonberries and figs, softishly carbonated with smooth, somewhat oily mouthfeel; dry-caramelly, brown-bready, crusty, in the end even mildly toasty malt sweetishness moving towards restrained bitterness, the latter also achieved by a herbal and floral hop note. Warming Schnapps-like alcohol ensues and gently warms the throat without interfering with the other flavours - just the way I like it in this kind of beer. Lovely nutty, bready and caramelly maltiness fills the finish, in a deliciously pure and genuine way. Lovely old school dark Doppelbock, very pure and malt-forward, uncomplicated yet sophisticated and perfectly balanced. Delicious.

Tap at Fränkisches Bierfest, with Jan and Jonas. Brown, deep copper, chestnut, slightly cloudy. Ash, pines, deep wood. Full, round, the right amount of soft, metallic, dry. Very drinkable.

Roodbruin bier met schuim. Smaak is bitterzoet met iets van geroosterd brood, wat karamel, vijgen, pruimen en wat vanille. Volgens mij geen straf om hiermee de vastentijd door te moeten komen.
