Since 1845, the recipe of every beer brewed at The Griffin Brewery has been handwritten in the Fuller’s brewing books. The Past Masters series is a glimpse into our unique brewing history, recreating authentic beers from this rich archive.
1981 ESB is the ninth beer in the Past Masters series. We’ve brewed something extra special to celebrate the career of Fuller’s legendary brewer John Keeling, who retires in 2018. This full bodied, fruity beer uses the Extra Special Bitter recipe from John’s first day at Fuller’s in January 1981.

Bottled. Reddish brown colour with a mediumsized slightly off-white head. Aroma is biscuity, toffeeish, some dried fruits, wood and mild herba tones. Flavour is dark dried fruits, some toffee, biscuits, red berry kind of slight tartness with slight herbal tones.

(Bottle) Dark amber colour, leaning towards mahogany, with big frothy beige head. Malty nose with dark bread, caramel, apricot marmalade, orange peel, wild berries and honey. Malty taste with caramel, bread, apricot marmalade, orange peel, butter, hay, honey and a mild spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Tasty, solid and well made ESB. Very nice.

25/1/2022. Bottle sample courtesy of danlo, cheers Ed! Pours slightly hazy dark amber brown with a lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, burnt caramel, stewy fruits, bready biscuit, raisins and dried apricot. Medium sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, average carbonation. Earthy finish. Interesting.

500m bottle from Fullers. Golden brown colour, off-white foam head leaving lacing and aroma of malt, toffee, fruity. Taste is sweetish, malt, toffee, bready, fruit cake, dried fruits, caramel, with some earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying tangy bitter finish with alittle residual sweetness. Quite drinkable.

0,5 bottle. Beautiful brownish-white head-crown, slightly opaque, copper red in color. Nice beer. You can also feel the aroma of raisins, wine, grapes and malt. It looks full-bodied. Carbonation is just good. Alcohol is a bit palpable. Dried fruity, medium-bodied, not very bitter. Caramel malty finish. Sweet aftertaste. Maybe I miss the hop-bitter, as it would be a bit ...

Gyönyörű barnásfehér habkorona, kicsit opálos, rézvörös szín. Szép sör. Mazsolás, boros, szőlős aroma, maláta is érezhető.

From a 500ml bottle on 23/2/2020. Pours a clear deep red amber with a big, fluffy, uneven head, which is the result of over carbonation. Smells of apple and dark fruit, with light malty notes. Taste wise, it's sweet and fruity with some jam and good dash of toasty malt. Rich, with a slick palate and over carbed as mentioned above. Quite enjoyable but the carbonation issue detracts.

500 ml bottle, from Skjold Burne Hjørring. ABV is 5.5%. Beautiful clear reddish brown colour, huge white (or slightly off-white) head, overcarbonated. Aroma of malts and toffee, dark dried fruits and ripe red fruits, a hint of mild spices. Flavour with the same elements, moderate hops. Fizzy mouthfeel.
