Bottled 500ml. -at Ambasada Zagreb. Darker golden coloured, medium sized white head, piney and caramel nose. Sweet malty, caramel, herbal and piney with strong bitter finish.

Bottle from meibier.de. Hazy cloudy orange with a tall head. Fruity nose, tropical fruit and pine. Full-bodied, malty and slightly yeasty, piney-bitter and full of tropical fruit. Smooth palate. Very good stuff!

Aroma is piney, dank, resinous, hoppy, herbal. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.

Golden orange amber, creamy head, light haze. Dank Cara nose, very smooth bitterness on the tongue with lots of West coast dank piney goodness. Citrus / tropical flavors are muted behind the resiny goodness.

A traditional German brewery in the Bamberg region reaching out to a 21st-century American craft brewer (Fat Head in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, founded in 2009) to create an old school West Coast IPA - clearly more and more German breweries are picking up interest in this postmodern craft beer idiom, albeit still rather quietly. Comes from a 50 cl bottle and apparently contains a whole line-up of now classic New World hop varieties. Thick and foamy, yellow-tinged egg-white, very regular, small- and even-bubbled, membrane-lacing head over an initially crystal clear, deep 'metallic' orange blonde beer with almost amberish tinge and fine strings of visible sparkling here and there, turning misty with sediment and even a tad clouded-brownish amber in the end (with some dead yeast bits sinking to the bottom) - yet far removed from the cloudiness seen in all those juicy IPAs these days. Herbal and spicy aroma of the old days in U.S. craft beer indeed (and how I miss those days): a ton of dry grapefruit peel, frying peanut oil, dry cigarette tobacco, green peppercorns, fried black olives, gasoline, bread crust, rusk, rosewater, the bitter white underside of an orange peel, old cheese, cumin seed, sweeter background whiff of mandarin underneath all that bitter hoppiness. Clean, crisp onset, medium carbonated with slight minerally notes, subtle dried-fruitiness (dried apricot, unripe banana perhaps), very oily and smooth, full body; lovely old-biscuity and dry bread crust-like maltiness underneath an impressive structure of dominant, uncompromising, resinous, quinine- and grapefruit peel-like bitterness from a whole bunch of hops (indistinguishable from each other). Retronasal effects of bitter chrysanthemum flowers, green peppercorns and gasoline linger for a long time - and so does this astringent, powerful bitterness, though it does allow for a very, very faint trace of almost honeyish sweetness to peep through in a very volatile, brief and almost unnoticeable manner. I had several returns to the old West Coast idiom in the past year or so, likely a reaction against that New England dominance in IPA, but most of them still had aspects of sweet 'friendliness' and juiciness, ending up as a softer, NEIPA-touched 'new' version of West Coast IPA; this one, however, goes all the way, as if NEIPA never existed. I rarely had a more convincing callback to the earlier days of craft beer than this one - this tastes like it was made in 2005 or something. Very, very convincing West Coast style if you ask me, I almost forgot how they tasted, but this is a firm, powerful and persuasive reminder, even if the bottle I got is clearly too old already. I wish I could have this fresh - and more importantly, I wish more IPAs were still like this; I am sure that many of those hordes of young craft beer geeks that joined in during the past five to ten years, never tasted anything like this and probably wouldn't even be able to enjoy it. This clearly does not go for me, I love it when the past comes back to life, but I'm getting old, I guess...

Weiherer / Fat Head's Hopferla, Flasche von Ganicks Flaschbiershop, Berlin. - Rotbraun, trüb. - In der Nase massige aber gedämpfte IPA-Noten: Orangeat, Ananas, Tabak, Harz. - Antrunk massiv hopfenherb mit sehr bitterer Grapefruitschale, Harz und Tabak auf satt toastigem Malz. Milder rezent, füllig weich; wenig süß. Wuchtig harzig-hopfenbitterer Abgang mit fränkischer Pfeffernote. Sehr langer, stark bitterer Nachtrunk. - Bis an die Schmerzgrenze gehopftes, enorm bitteres doch aromatisch etwas schmalspuriges IPA. Kann man trinken, aber rechte Freude kommt da nicht auf. 500ml bottle. Cloudy, orangey golden colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Piney, citrusy, slightly sweaty resinous and minimally floral, hoppy aroma, notes of orange, pineapple, lemon peel, some gooseberrybiscuity malty background with a touch of peanut. Taste is bitter, piney, resinous, grassy and minimally citrusy hoppy, minimally sweet biscuity malty with a touch of peanut, woody hints of pineapple. Creamy, oily texture, super-soft, smooth palate. West Coast style indeed, quite bitter, resinous and piney, well crafted, sadly almost without citrusy fruity aspects.
