As brewers, we get the privilege to sample our beers straight from the tanks in all their raw glory. Some beers need a little polishing to get ready to go out into the world, while others—the hop-heavy, rowdy, crowd-pleasers—should just be left alone. We wanted to share this brewery-only treat with you, so we present this Hazy Little Thing, our unfiltered, unprocessed IPA, straight from the tanks and into the can.

Well that’s delicious. It’s like biting into a pine tree.

Unfiltered and thus hazy IPA by craft beer 'oldtimer' Sierra Nevada, which played a pivotal role in the earliest developments of American style APA and IPA - and one of the last breweries I would associate with the much more recent hazy IPA craze. I guess this is their answer to the NEIPA wave and am very curious to find out how they interpret it. Can from the new Jumbo supermarket in Ghent, now apparently three months old. Egg-white, quite thick and frothy, dot-lacing, bit irregular yet generally stable head on an indeed hazy honey-golden robe. Aroma of dried grapefruit peel, lemongrass, unripe mango, some granadilla and guava, dry bread crust, moist white pepper, background hints of damp earth, soggy white bread pulp and diesel. Quite crisp onset - more so than usual for a NEIPA - with stingy, minerally carbonation, on the sharp side for the intended style; dryish with some dried apricot and green banana accents, moving into a softish, bit oily body of white-bready malts with a sweeter brioche-like side, increasingly soaked in citrusy and moderately tropical hops with a strong grassy component - lemongrass, as well as pomelo, lime zest, unripe guava, maracuja and a hint of green mango, with a sweetish accent but also an underlying bitterness that more easily reaches the West Coast of the United States than the East Coast, establishing a peppery, bit citrus pith-like effect that lingers on for a long time, yet without becoming deeply rooty and tonic-like (even though there is a slight hint at 'hop burn' after swallowing). Feels like the umpteenth 'compromise' IPA trying to move back from New England to California, but given that this actually comes from California and from one of the very founders of West Coast IPA and eighties style APA, it is rather remarkable that they manage to create even that very illusion. In a more general sense, it is a really fine hazy IPA, but more bitter, effervescent and citric than your typical contemporary NEIPA would be, as well as less 'sultry' and tropical; for me this is not an issue at all, and even if I still prefer Sierra Nevada's more classic offerings over this, I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised. Enjoyed it.

12oz can achetée à Jumbo, Maastricht. BB 01/2025, canned 03/29/2024.

Weich. Gut.
