At first glance, the true power of Brooklyn Cloaking Device is hidden. All at once there comes a wave of Brett-powered earthy aromas, a thrilling rush of Cacao-like fruitiness, hints of vanilla and pineapple, a touch of acidity, underlying forest-floor funk and the powerful murmur of French oak barrels. A beautifully dry finish cuts through and leaves you wondering how we got the drop on you. This is the true power of the Cloaking Device: the element of surprise.
Cloaking Device stands as a tribute to these porters past. We brewed a strong Brett-fermented porter and aged it for nine months in French oak red wine barrels from our pals at the Larkmead Winery in California. It was then hand-bottled and re-fermented in the bottle with Champagne yeast. It is delicious, a versatile companion for food, and conducive to dreams of adventure.

Ingredients:

Malts: 2-row, Crystal 150, Crisp Chocolate, Crisp Black, Roasted barley

Hops: Summit, East Kent Golding

Yeast: Brettanomyces cultivated in our lab

Original Gravity: 21.1° Plato

Bottle, 75cl corked. It's an almost black one, unclear, with a dark beige head that lasts. Earthy, mouldy almost cardboardy aroma at first, followed by roasted malts, dark dried fruits, blue plums and cocoa. It's full bodied and nicely carbonated, soft and with a light warmth. Mostly on the dry side, but with some sweetness in the back. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark dried fruits, some brown sugar notes, almost rum-like, blue plums and a pleasant bitterness in the flavour. Some earthy notes, quite vinous, with wood notes. Ever lasting finish. A wonderful beer I hope to see again. 180310

Big bottle, 11.3 % abv, kindly shared by Finn. Very dark body with a deep reddish shade. Fawn-coloured head, fair lacing. Malt-berry aromas, dry. Flavoured with cocoa, dark bread, oak and the red wine touch beneath. Warming, vinous ending. Rounded mouth feel. Nice sipper qualities on a Saturday eve together with friends. (Tromsø 24.02.2018).
