The Memmelsdorf cult-beer: Drei Kronen "Stöffla"! Not for nothing our smokey beer specialty was honored with the gold medal of the European Beer Star 2003. And the balanced taste is also excellent: The delicate, smoky note and the fine aroma hops (from Spalt) in the nose form a taste symbiosis that unfolds on the palate.

Bright amber. Fairly rich smoke nose, light caramel. Smokey-caramelly palate...good balance. The bitterness is fairly robust for the style. There’s a slight alcoholic strength in the finish as well, somehow. Fairly dry in the finish with a spicy accent.

Draught @ brewerypub Drei Kronen, Memmelsdorf. Hazy reddish-amber color with a medium creamy off-white head. Toastmalty aroma with caramel and some notes of smoke. Initially malty and fruity. Medium sweet flavour, medium body, low carbonation. A very malty brew with a dry liquorice-spicy, slightly smoked but quite lasting finish.

Very attactive beer - orange chestnutty amber, big creamy head. Light smoke aroma, otherwise sweet honeyish malt nose. Subtly smoked, more like green wood and junoper notes - light herbal edge. Ends on a wooden note. A quite subtle brew - very nice composition.

Swing-top bottle (bought at the brewey): Amber coloured with red tints; fruity (honey) nose, light but distinctive traces of smoked malts and caramel; light bitter-sweet taste ending also bitter-sweet, only very low hop character. Quite well balanced between a slightly malty body and a light bitter finish; but the smoke is not very impressive. O.K., nothing more.

Sampled draught at Drei Kronen, Memmelsdorf.
A few steps away from Höhn lies the next brewery. This is their rauchbier which comes across brownish amber, It is only lightly smokey, and dry and roasty. The mouthfeel is soft and pleasantly rounded. Towards the finish their is a bit more beechwood smoke, but rather low bitterness.
