High gravity black ale brewed with Ty Ty honey, copious amounts of hops and aged on toasted Spanish Cedar.
Part 2 of a 4 beer collaboration between Cigar City, Hill Farmstead, and Grassroots.
A note from Joey Redner: "The beers are basically black IPA’s brewed with lots of Citra, Mt. Rainier and Simcoe along with Ty Ty honey from North Florida aged on medium toast Spanish Cedar. There are different hop additions in the Hill Farmstead/Grassroots version (Or) and the 2-row base malt in the CCB version (Either) is replaced with Pilsner malt in the Vermont/Denmark version (Or). There are also some process differences which is one of the purposes of a collaboration; allowing breweries to learn from each other.
The goal was to make two beers that were alike, but slightly different due to preferences in regional approach and access to ingredients. The four beers in this collaborative series will be named:
Either, Or, Neither and Nor. Either and Or will release first and the other two will follow. Both Either and Or were brewed at CCB, but Neither and Nor will be brewed as single batches in both Vermont and Denmark.

33 cL bottle at ACBF2011. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Spiced, dark roasted and dense malty aroma. Breadish. Smooth, sweet, roasted breadish and dark malty. Light hops fruity and rather bitter and dry roasted. Ends dry.

Head gone in seconds over near-black beer with a beautiful granat sheen. C-hops, but with a very marked meaty ester presence, like the juices dribbling out of a fresh roast - with grapefruit. Again roasted in the mouth, with sweet, roasted, and just-not-salty flavours. Very rounded, filling, balanced. Alcoholwarming, very thick and near syrupy texture. This is both original and excellent - a rare combination to be cherished.

Bottle @ Odense Tasting, Feb. 2011. Pours black with a creamy beige head. Nose is grapefruit, toffee and caramel. Smooth. Dry and bitter flavor. Cedar and grapefruit. Very dry and bitter hoppy end.

Black with a small but lasting tan head. Aroma of licoriice and citrus, lots of orange peel, with some dark chocolate. The aroma is complex and very inviting. Sweet flavour with lots of toffee, some licorice and a hint of roasted flavour. Lots of fruity hops, along with hop bitterness and a tannic cedar bitterness

Bottle. Creamy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Balck colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Average moderate bitter flavor. Some chocolate notes. Slightly swetrer than either. Creamy palate.

Appearance: Pours damn near coal black with a nice sized dark beige head and good lacing
Aroma: Dark malts and fruit, cedar and spices
Taste: Dark malts, ashy with a nice cedar finish

A nice, malt-leaning Black IPA. The beer poured dark brown verging on black with a small light brown head. The aroma had citric hoppiness, honey, tobacco, chocolate and roasted malt. It’s a more nuanced aroma than Either, but the hop and malt notes clash somewhat. The taste was drier than Either and, again, more nuanced, but some notes clashed a bit and the more muted sweetness made it stand out a bit more than in Either. Mouthfeel was a bit thinner than Either but still good. Interesting to try these two beers against each other, as they vary more than expected.

12oz Bottle next to Either thanks to ditmier. Pours out black topped with a nice tan head. Aroma was a better than Either. Lots of the same hops citrus, pine, along with some roast, and the cedar was preset but not overwhelming. Not a big fan of the cedar on some of their other beers but this one was nice light hints of cedar not full in your face. Taste was as the aroma light cedar, hop, roast malts, and some sweetness.

Pours dark brown/black color with light brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, cedar and citrus. Roasted malt flavor with lots of citrus and some spiciness from the cedar. Medium body with average carbonation.
